Beneficial Microbes: Companion, Bio-Link Plus, Piranha, Tarantula - what's best?
permalink

I've been trying to weigh the pros and cons of products like Bio-Link Plus, Companion, Piranha, and Tarantula. Up 'till now I've been growing with FoxFarm's nutes in Happy Frog soil. After this grow I'm going to try my hand at hydroponics. What I really like about the Happy Frog is it has a lot of beneficals in it but FF doesn't make anything for hydro that does. Which leaves me looking for other products. I'm probably going to just use all the same brand of stuff since it's just a lot easier to fit everything together that way.

Money isn't really a problem, but I want to take it into consideration anyway. There's no point in spending more just to spend more, right? Also, I'm looking for suggestions on the best places to buy whatever is best. I've been able to price compare on Piranha, Tarantula, and Bio-Link Plus, but I can't find any online stores for Companion. Not even a suggested retail price, which makes me think it's probably the most expensive.

I'm going to be running ebb and flow so I'm not worried about clogged sprayers or anything, I just want to make sure I've got the strongest roots possible. Soil buffers plants against a lot of the mistakes that can hurt them in hydroponics, so I want to keep as much of that benefit as possible when I cross over.

(btw, I mostly post on a different forum, but I'm want to find some less-biased opinions so I want to ask the fine folks here.)

I'm looking for something with the power to grow a giant root mass on a billiard ball, but I'll settle for something that can actually happen. Anyone have experience with any of this stuff? Have anything to recommend beyond these (Bio-Link Plus, Piranha, Tarantula, or Companion)?

I've had good luck with Turantula, but the root mass didn't get that big.
Lately I've been using the House and Garden rooting booster. It's expensive but a little goes a long way and my last grow I vegged for 20 days in 4 inch rockwool cubes. The root mass on some of them was very impressive. It took 2 hands to move the plants when I put them into the flower room. I can't say exactly how big the roots were but they were stretching out about 8 inches on every side of the cube. I'm very impressed with it.

Hygrozyme every 10 days is all you need. The stuff is really awesome. Piranha and Tarantula are great too but you will not be sorry using hygrozyme.
Peace,

Beneficial Bacteria
permalink

Thanks for all the advice on choosing a good system for beneficial bacteria/fungus. I ended up going with the Advanced Nutrients options and I can't say enough good stuff about it.

I followed their calculator pretty close, at least proportionally. I used a bit less than the calc said to because my plants couldn't eat any more than that but that was without a doubt my best grow to date and I keep doing better and better. It made a believer out of me, I don't think I'll ever grow without beneficial bacteria and fungus again.

I also used Voodoo Juice for the first time that grow. After asking around and doing some research of my own, I think that's what made the roots explode like they did. I don't know if it was just that or the combination of the beneficial bacteria and fungus, but I thought they were gonna grow feet and go Little Shop of Horrors on me.

Thanks again for all the help!

QFT.

I don't know how to describe it, but when you've got it all working together the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. It's hard to know how much difference something like this, that improves your root function, is having because it's not an immediate effect. But if you do it side-by-side, wow. It's major.
