do i need air stone?
permalink

i have a 130+ gallon res

w/ a large chiller and a 1000+ gph pump

water falls out of 3/4 hose from about 4" above water level in res and pump is on opposite end to circulate water

do i need an air pump or will the chiller/pump/water fall/ be addicute O2?

is there a way to use this system to avoid the need for an air pump?

if i do need an air pump which is the best all around for this size res.?

- also - i wonder why the ezcloner has an air pump - seems like spraying would eliminate the need

a waterfall of about a foot should be all you need, if you dont want an airstone.

if the water falls 1 foot - wont it cause splashing and create more mess to clean?

do you just let it fall straight down or do you try and create some type of cascading effect?

splashing is a possibility... depends how you set it up.

never seen anyone cascade a waterfall before. usually its just a pvc pipe dumping into a res.

this isnt really my field. waterfalls are loud and messy.

i got for the air stones, 2 liter a minute/per gallon is reportedly the "ideal" though i know few people with airpumps anywhere near that big.

I grow e&f with 40 gallon reservoirs and do not use airstones. A chiller keeps the res at 66 degrees and the dissolved oxygen comes from when my table drains back into the reservoir.

thats true
the lower temps add more O2 - plus with pellets you water more often so you get a bit more oxygen from ore frequent drains
thanks

Alternative Garden Supply - Hydroponics & Indoor Gardening Super Store
Eco Plus 5 Commercial Air Pump, 80W , 88L/min in Pet Supplies - BizRate

this one does 88L per min so they say this is only ideally good for a 44 gallon res

wow - i see why no one has one even near that- i cant even find one big enough at that rate

are you sure the math is correct - i seen some that were rated gph??

Yep, same here. but he never said what kinda of setup he had

those eco 5 pumps are nice. pretty loud, i sold mine and kept the two eco 4's. now i regret it.

alita makes the big bad ass pumps, if you are looking. i think 2000 cc/min is insanely high too... but GD2K insists and hes the man when it comes to this sorta thing.

Air Pumps

even the larges one isnt 2Lper min for 130 GLN res - its just over 1 liter per min

but if i factor in the chiller nad the water fall - im sure its betterthan most and will work fine
