I've been reading a lil on air pruning in rockwool. I was wondering if this would be appropriate for MJ also. I have clones in 1.5in plugs that I'm currently moving into the larger 4in by 4in. These are going to sit in a tray with perlite on the bottom until they are ready for the flowering room. When ready they will be placed into 5gal top drip buckets with clay pebs. As they explain it, with the plastic wrap the rockwool comes in removed, the roots will grow to the ends of rockwool and poke out, when they see light and the dry air they'll stop, kinda dry up at the tip. At this time smaller root hairs will extend from this main root thus filling the entire rockwool cube. They claim that once an air pruned clone is moved into it's hydro system that the growth is "explosive". Makes sense to me, figured I'd ask the experts. I have a lot of time before they have to go in so if this is a working method then I think it will benefit me. Any ideas welcome and appreciated ![]() Thanks fam ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think the wrap helps to keep out light and limit algae growth. Also helps to hold in moisture just in case you over do it with the light and heat. Kinda an extra layer of protection against screw ups Thats the idea anyways

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | i think its just for handling purposes really. the plastic makes them not fall apart, prevents plants from growing together, and slows down how long the cubes take to dry out. assuming you can adjust your water cycle to fit the needs of the cubes...i dont think it will much matter how fast they dry out. air pruning is something i typically see related to tree's. no idea how mj's roots will respond to it..but those new "smart pots" rely on the same principals of air pruning and claim to be the greatest shit since sliced bread.... so why not cut em off and give it a twirl? good call on the algae pesci...most people that unwrap the cubes fill the table with hydroton. others just drape panda plastic over the whole thing...but thats a pain in the butt with alot of plants. they even sell 4" plastic rockwool top covers to make the whole square light proof.

![]() ![]() | thanks blue, that is a good one, fo sho! I love learning all this chit! Ok, I have some Sweet Tooth in a 4in rockwool cube with wrap removed and a set with the wrap. Man, the set with the wrap grows roots outside the cube, lots more going down into the perlite and more wrapping around the cubes but still outside the cube. The cubes that are completely suspended on wire racks have thick root tips poking out, they darken at the end and stop, they are poking about 1/4in from the cube. They are all over, prob 20 on each side and 20 on the bottom also. The stopping tips along with the growth of the clone tells me that the cube is filling up with roots! This seems to be working REAL REAL good! ![]()

![]() ![]() | any update on this? Im interested in knowing how mj takes to air pruning. I was just checking it out in the urban gardener magazine and sounded like a damn good idea.
