Using picnic/camping coolers as reservoirs
permalink

I have been having high water temperatures in my reservoir and was wondering if anyone had tried using coolers as reservoirs.

I was thinking that the insulation inside of a food cooler might do the trick to keep my nutrient solution's temperature more stable. Not sure if cutting a few holes in one would negate the insulation.

Any input?

Thanks

I haven't done it but suggest a test ...

Hi, nilknarf420 While I have never tried an insulated reservoir it seems like a good idea.

Let's see, insulation will reduce heat flow both into and out of the reservoir. So if the external temperature is greater than the reservoir temperature the insulation will help.

On-the-other-hand, if the reservoir temperature is high because of a 'hot pump' then the insulation will keep the heat in.

The gradient (difference) between the environment temperature and the reservoir temperature may be a place to start; that is, measure both without insulation. If the difference is slight, then I would think that insulation is not required.

If the difference is significant, then measure the temperature of the reservoir using the insulation.

If the cooler is just styrofoam then I suggest beefing up the support structure and consider lining it with plastic.

Good advice, thanks.

I never really thought about the pumps causing enough heat to affect the res temperature. I do have two pumps running in the res that needs cooling.
