Can I transfer soil clones to a hempy bucket?
permalink

One of my friends has some nice clones he'll give me. They are in soil in solo cups, but I really want to grow them using a hempy bucket. I wanted to use 3 parts perlite to 1 part vermiculite. But can I transfer them over to a hempy bucket or will they have to be grown in soil?

Should be no problem, I've done it several times. I just gently rinse as much soil off as possible, it isn't necessary to get it all, they don't seem to hardly miss a beat.

You can transfer, but be careful.

One way to do it is when you get them out of the cups, gently shake off all the soil you can without breaking too many roots. Plant as normal, but be prepared for more settling than usual, as the dirt will tend to wash away when watering.

Treat them gently- transplant shock if any is worse going from one medium to another.

I wouldn't shake off the soil... Gently rinse it off without breaking roots. Another tip.. Give them some time to get a grip on thier new home before hitting them with any big lights.

About shaking Vs. rinsing.....
permalink

I just shake em to get the loose dirt off, never really took it all out unless I was wintering a Bonsai tree and needed bare roots to make it dormant.

Actually I'm lazy enough I'd probably just plop them down in the Hempy Perlite and cover the soil, then let it wash out over time.

I believe in being a little rough with them. If they got good roots they'll make it. If not, forget 'em, they were Timmies and never caught up.

Sure you can, an EZ way to wash off much of the soil, is to have a 2 or 3 gallon bucket full of water, and then just take em out of the solo cup, hold the rootball in you hand, lower it into the water and gentlely wash away the soil. like haz been said, you do not need to get it all off.

If they got good roots, yes, what I do is put them in, water with plain water or a 25% nute solution the first day, then increase the nutes every 2 days till they are full strength, or plants look like they are hating the nutes. Water in the middle, you want the water to go straight down, so the roots will go down to the res. faster.

yeah, i agree, use lukewarm water (things loosen up more with heat) and gently rinse them.

like tripps said, it doesnt matter if you get all the dirt, just the majority, you want the roots intact.

but dont worry, mj is a strong plant.

perhaps mist the plant a bit while its getting used to the new environment.
