Post Nute Burn - A Recovery scenario
permalink

I noticed a few folks trying to flush with lower strength nutes to recover from nute burn, this is not best practice IMO, you need to remove salts from the plants, so bunging any nutrient in the flush water is counter productive

pH of Flush water: Should be kept within range, this means 5.2 -6.3 IMO if you do not keep the pH within range, the plants metabolism will be even more out of wack when you try to re-introduce nutes - it's about ion exchange for the technically adept

Burn Scenario

Day 1
I set up a new res, and introduced small clones to my NFT tray, two were 8" two were only 4". My 50L res was made up as follows:
50ml A + B Canna substra (soft) Vega
+1.5ml 81% phos acid (ph down)
Initial EC = 0.8 pH 5.6
res temp 73F
cabinet 72 -80 F (off/on)
RH 62% (with wet towels re-wetted twice a day)

Day 2
Am EC=0.8 pH=6.1
Pm EC=0.8 pH=6.2
+0.5ml pH down - pH=5.5

Day 3
Am EC=0.8 pH=5.7
PM no readings/away at work

Day 5
RH 20%
Am: noticed smaller plants showing first sign of nute burn, leaf edges curling growth stopped The cab was very dry bacause I couldn't wet the space down.

New res, EC=0 pH= 5.9 Flushing

Day 6
AM: RH now back up at 60% as I was there to wet the towels
EC=0 pH =6.3
+0.5ml pH down pH=5.2
+10l water pH=5.5
PM: EC=0 pH=5.8

Day 7
EC=0 pH=5.0

This big drop in pH indicated the plant is chucking something back into the res, so I changed the water I left the pump disconnected overnight (by accident) but all was still well...

New res EC=0 pH set to 5.7

Day 8
AM: Even tho the pump was disconnected, the pH rose to 5.9 overnight, pump back on.
PM: EC=0 pH=5.7

Day 9
EC=0 pH=5.2 Hmm pH still dropping - not recovered yet, plants not responding with new growth yet.
+5l water pH=5.3 -stil too low for dropping pH scenario
+50ml Silicon pH=6.3 - too high now
+0.5ml pH down pH=5.8 - that'll do, mid range allows pH to go either way with some room

Day 10
EC=0 pH=5.0 - still dropping
+35ml Silicon pH=5.8- mid range=good again
Plants look much better, fresh new growth on all tops, yellowing limited to lower old growth - looking much better. - decided to leave them another day.

Day 11
The Bigger of the clones have now started to pail off in colour, these were much less effected by the burn, all clones are WW but two different phenos The smaller clones have just recovered at this point, it would be easy to burn them again here.

New res.
40ml A +B EC=0.7 pH=6.7
+1.5ml pH down pH=5.4

Day 12
AM: EC=0.6 pH=5.2
+35ml Silicon pH=5.8 left pump off to allow a good mix.
PM: EC=0.7 pH=5.9 re-connect pump

Day 13
AM: EC=0.5 pH=6.2
+10ml A+B +5l water
EC=0.7 pH=6.2
+50ml Silicon
+0.75ml pH down pH=5.5

PM: Plants responded to new nutrients – much greener and 1.5” growth per day

Day 14
EC=0.6 pH=5.8
Lush new growth – EC going down, pH going up – Recovery Confirmed as plants are taking nutes and 2” growth per day.

From this Burn Scenario, caused because the RH dropped far too much for the level of nute strength, the plants overtranspired to cope with the low humidity, and nutrient salts biult up in the leaf tissue; you can clearly see that even a mild case of nute burn, required at least a week of flushing and constant monitoring to get to a confirmed recovery stage.

A low ppm flush would not have worked, and flushing for anything less than a week would probably mean a slower recovery, if indeed they would have recovered without continued flushing

Hope this helps someone

San

A read through that rescue and repair list just reinforces oneself that getting into such troubles in the first place is worth spending effort and diligence avoiding.

Chuffin nute burn....who invented that then

Well, I'm not sure who invented it, but I've managed a few copyright infringements I can safely say that I can burn plants as good as any man, if not better

Switched to Canna Aqua range I did the last grow on Substra (designed for run to waste) which burnt, and the start of this one, which burnt notice I never got above 0.8 EC too, it even singed your thought-to-be-impervious WW clones, all be it not as bad as it fried my WW pheno (didn't even bother to keep the genetics on that since I got yours )

First impressions are good, rec pH is 5.4 - 6.4, I mixed a batch of 1.0 EC with 60ml A+B in 50L and the pH settled at 5.8 without any down in seems much more stable than the substra range for NFT, Bargain

I'm also testing some new clone spray folier feed stuff for our friendly growshop, looks very promising requireing no mixing, used neat from the bottle more when i have some conclusive results

What is it? I know you said more when you have conclusive results but I can't wait that long!

The product is called quick start - it seems to do just what is says on the tin

nulifetech.com.au/Products.htm#quickstart

The small test batch are looking very good for 6 days old, roots are branching off the main tap already, from the bottom of the 1" rockwool cubes. I will have to move into bigger cubes on day 7.

I have some control clones just in water, although they rooted, it's a small tap in comparrison, and no branching yet, they have yellowed off somewhat, and look rather withered compared to the clones treated with quickstart.

no mixing, just spray once every other day for clones, once every 3rd day for seedlings, you can also presoak the cubes with a 20% dilution, but I only found out about pre-soaking after this batch were started, so it could get even better

Blimey, that was a blast from the past necro post even

It's all aboutwater quality matey Back in 2003 I lived up North, where the water is purer than the local girls it was 0.0EC straight from the tap the water was so good you could use it to top up lead acid batteries instead of buying distilled

Then I moved to a liquid chalk area and discovered I knew fu<k all about growing it was a learning experiance
