![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ok ok.. so with my first hydro grow under my belt i started my second. i'm on about day 14 of veg, but i had some problems. the problems that i have been having are all to do with growing roots. since the roots are pretty much the most important part of the plant, i thought i'd post this and see what members get to work for them, when starting from seed that is. how i go about doing the deed is to germinate in papertowel, then place the germinated seedlings in pre soaked rockwool. the cubes soak in pH ballanced RO water, no nutes, no nothing. but it seems this is not the best way to do things as it has been taking forever to get the roots to get outta the rockwool and hit the DWC pool! i always squeeze the excess water out, then place them in a humidity dome. when the rockwool is nearly dry, i dip it in the pH ballanced solution. this has not seemed to work all that well, i just got roots a couple days ago. this was after 14days of germination, and 10 days of veg, so really its set me behind. so now heres is where you all contribute. how do u soak your rockwool, and in what? for how long? and how long does it take to get your roots outta your rockwool or net pots? if there is anyone using DWC or SWC, when do your roots hit the pool. i figured this would most definatly help me when grow #3 begins, and the whole roots situation has put me behing by about 2 week in thre previous two grows. so lets here it hc.com.... how do u do your roots? skitz

Here's what I do. I learned this from Jamesgang & it works great. I soak the rockwool in 1/2tsp. per gal. of liquid kelp ph'd to 6.0. I let it soak for at least 24 hours. I put a 1" layer of hydroton in the bottom of a 3" net pot. Then I set the rockwool plug on top of the hydroton & fill in the empty space around the plug with more hydroton. Next, I prepare the rockwool for a seed by tearing small pieces loose from the top of the plug, then place the seed, point down, on top of the plug & place the pieces of rockwool I pulled loose lightly on top of the seeds. Once the seeds are planted, I put the net pots under a humidity dome with the humidity at 95% & the temp at 78f. Placing the seeds point down is very important. The pointy end is where the root tip will come out. Sometimes it's difficult to tell which end is which. So I look at the seeds through a magnifying glass. One end of the seed will come to a point, the other end will have a depression in it & have a lighter coloring in the middle of the depression. This is the end that will act as a hinge when the sprout comes out. Getting the seeds planted correctly will greatly increase your chances of getting sprouts. Here are pics of what I'm talking about. The pic of the plant was taken 14 days after I planted the seed. The pic of the roots were taken 15 days after I planted the seed. Hope this helps, 86.

so what i am missing is the added is the liquid kelp eh? whats the TDS of the solution with the kelp? and where is your water level in your DWC before the roots hit the pool? or do u just put them into their designated spots when the roots show... i think me having my rockwool to moist kept the roots all bundled up in their.. i may be wrong... any more perspectives or helpful hints... anyone? skitz

The ppm of the solution is 200 & the ph is 6.0. I squeeze a very small amount of the solution out of the rockwool before placing the seed on top of it. As long as you keep the rh% in the humidity dome really high you shouldn't have to rewet the rockwool. As soon as the sprout pops it's top out of the rockwool I but it in the bubbler with the lights about 3' away. Until the roots hit the solution I mist the sprouts twice a day with 1/2 tsp per gal liquid kelp ph'd to 5.7. I keep the solution in the bubbler about 1/2" above the bottom of the net pot. As soon as the roots hit the solution I lower the level of the solution to about 1/4" below the bottom of the net pot. I start out with the solution in the bubbler at 400ppm with a ph of 5.7. Good Luck Bro, 86.
