HI..... Quick question about my PPM readings in my res.. Ok well my regular tap is 300ppm. Now, I am at a young point in my grow, approx. 14 days in veg, and I know that i should keep my PPM low. like 300 low....My question is, since my tapwater is so high in a TDS reading, should i be adding nutes??? Or would this kill me plants?
Oh, the reason i put this in here was because i thought it regarded my vegitive growth more. MAybe i would be better off in the nutrients section.

You need to add some nutes.
Just keep the total ppm under 500 & you should be ok.
If I were you, I get nutes made for hard water. If you don't, there's a very good chance you'll end up locking out some of the nutes your plants need.

I've been trying to guage my nute strength following Dev's nute guide. By knowing the CF of the reservoir at the start of the day, you measure again at the end. If the CF hasn't changed then the plants are taking water and nutes in the same quantities and you know you have it right. If the ppm rises, the nute strength is too high so reduct the res cf to lower than the morning and try again. Vice versa if the 2nd reading drops.

Mid veg 500
Late Veg (over 20 days) 6-700
Flowering Early (if not vegged long) 6-700
Flowering Early (if vegged long) 7-900

Then throughout flowering just raise it gradually. Some plants like high nutes others don't Hydros great cause a flush is a snap of the fingers. If you see problems. Flush then ease back into the nutes.

Ok, this time i have a question about my water that i add to my nutes... If you look in this thread you will find a post, by me, that talks about filtration of water. Anyways, this got me to thinking. How low of a PPM should i start with. I mean, only water, no nutes added. What should the PPM be at. Is it gonna over nute my plants if i get the PPM down to, say, 20, and get my PPM to be at 400(or so) with my nutes in it, after being at 420PPM with my tap water having a TDS reading of 300 to start?? whew, thats a question.

If your tap is 300 PPM and you filter it... the lowest you can get it, the better.

As far as over doing the nutes, it's a plant stage thing. If they are capable of handling 400 PPM of nutes, then no, you won't burn them.

I have used distilled water, which has 0 PPM in it, and this actually worked better for me. Only problem was getting the amount I needed when I needed it. PITA!


I'm sure you meant to post this as a reply to the other thread. No need to start multiple threads for basically the same thing. Hit up some Grow journals and see what's going on for other people. You could learn alot. There is one by Agent86 called Day by Day something... Read the first three pages and sha zooom!!!!.......you'll see what I mean.

My buddy the Chemist used to get his water from his girlfriends. They had one of those filters that uses reverse osmosis. He got the PPm down to like 10 or something insane using it. I tried Brita Water filters and they really don't work. SO I just get spring water from Wally World for 50 cent a gallon. The water has a ppm of around 100. At this point I just hand pour nutes like a cook. So I only measure the final TDS. After awhile you just know what to add and when.

I did an experiment today, using brita, and the results were amazing. It cuts my waters PPM in half each time i use it. I have a thread from earlier today that says the exact numbers. But my point being, i got it down to 40 i think. And that was filtered 3 times. kinda a pain in the butt.....But it sure is cheap.
