Okay well... Dunno why I didnt think about this when I was setting up my bubblers, but anyway. Heres the problem...

My mother has decided to pay me a surprize visit tommorow from another state up north...

Now its a pretty long drive, so I've got some time to think about this.

Anyways; She wont be visiting that long, and it will be during lights-out, so all the fans & stuff will be off. So thats not a problem.

BUT now that I've got 2 bubblers bubbling happily away in my closet, it certianly sounds like something suspicious is going on in there.

I'm wondering how long would it be safe to leave the air pumps off without drowning my plants?

I thought about draining most of the water out of the res, and leaving a small amount in the bottom, and then shutting off the pumps... Its only going to be around 6 hours during lights-out... Would this be neccesary?

Anyways, thanks in advance for the replies

Peace,

Im not your best help on this, but I think you have a good idea.

extra sober thought! what about going in every hour or two or so while she's there to spray the roots with the water?

I understand its lights out,, but can they take quick bounts of low light?

Hiya northern! Thanks for the extra-sober thought I think its pretty neccesary for it to be 100% pitch black for 12 hours straight tho, any light whatsoever will interrupt their cycle... So, as good an idea as it is, I dont think it'd work..

BigToke: Thank you for your re-assurance! I think I'll just turn off the pumps and leave em... Exellent.

Thanks again guys!

You have nothing to worry about if you throw a little light on them during lights out. It won't bother the flower cycle whatsoever. I just thought I'd put that in there, afterburner.

I cannot help you with the hydro question. Whatever keeps the roots moist will work.

Thanks buzz! Good to know!

N. Skunk - I'm not sure... It'd be a little tough to sneak in there and spray some nute solution on the roots while she was here...

Hehe, Hmm.. I'll probably just turn off the pumps and hope for the best, thx anyway tho! That spray technique might come in handy should I have to leave the pumps off for longer periods in the future.

My understanding is plants don’t uptake nutes at night at all.. my e&f system is off all night long with no problems at all. I think your idea of draining some of the nutes out is a great idea.. Don’t want your babies to drowned now do ya.

Bubblers are great for keeping the nutes oxygenated but if left off for a long time I would think that might cause problems as roots need O2 as well as nutes.

Hey afterburner....

I've went as long as 19 hrs, without the pumps on. Power outage. No problem. I have also drained the res., while moving, and left empty for several hours. If you mom's only there for a day, I think you'll be O.K., with a full res/no pumps. The beauty part of bubblers is.... High dissolved oxygen content.
