Concept of hydro
permalink

Okay, so, ive been thinking about hydro growing and I dont know what type this is but ive come up with some sort of a diagram for my future grow. Does this make sense?

There are 6 holes in the top of the rubbermaid bin thing, and then there is a bubbler next to it that just blowes air into the tank. then theres the water and the nutes under the plants? i dont really get it. How do the plants get nutrients if theyre too short to reach the water. and what am i missing, im confused. its partially because its 3am, partially because im slow, and partially because i just smoked a blunt sized joint.

either way my bed over there is looking good.

PLZ: some responses for my wake tomorrow!

Thanks guys i love your wizdom

Would you just look at that sad drawing. Anyway, it gets my mental picture across, which is all that matters

That would be a bubbler. Some use 5 gallon buckets and it seems you've done it with a Rubbermaid. If the roots are too short to reach the water, bring the water to the root level. Keep the bottom of the basket slightly submerged until enough roots are below the basket.

You may want to check out my indoor hyrdo grow journal, i'm using I think the same system basically (although they're no pictures just yet but I give pretty verbose descriptions, just skip my first post though as I've totally changed from that - the link is in my signature).

If I get you right you're doing the simple bubbler system, get a rubber maid bin, fill it with a hydro medium (hyrdoton rocks are my favorite for this), fill it with water, bury the plants (which are in cubes) on top and put an air-stone at the bottom.

In a previous grow of mine (one which I consider highly successful, and this was recommended to me by another grower who had great results with this (plus it's real cheap and easy to build)):
A way that I've done that before is with 2 paint buckets. Drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of one. In the other bucket I placed two airstones, then put the 'holey bucket' on top of that one. Drew the air line out from the holes, then filled the top bucket with my hydroton rocks. I put my oasis cubed seedling in the rocks top, and just had to top off - I had some great results with that system.

The airstone connects to an airline which runs out of your system to an air pump.

More airstones the better - you'll need a lot of air if you're plants are going to grow in a tub of water. Air is always good for roots, you always want to maximize it as much as possible.

You'll want a way to drain your reservoir so you could change the water. Some suggestions for that are: a spigot at the bottom, a pump placed at the bottom that you could turn on to pump water out, or use a 2nd reservoir (controller bucket these are called often) that is attached to your 1st reservoir. This remote reservoir is useful since you can have more convenient access to it, you'll be able to monitor the water conditions and level as well.

Also be careful with rubbermaid bins full of water, if you move them like that you're almost definitely going to spring a leak - just about all bins aren't designed to take the weight and pressure from water and will break if you move them with water in them.

An airstone is what you would use in a fish tank.....makes all those nice tiny bubbles....they can be found at all pet stores, hydro stores and such...just plug them into the end of the air line....I use weighted one's i got from my local hydro store....they stay on the bottom better i think, but cost a little more...you can see mine in the bottom of this bucket setup. there's 2 in there..

good luck

I really like that bucket setup. I decided to work out what I think I might to in Microsoft Paint. This could be exactly what you're doing, but I just want to lay it out there since your whole setup isnt 100% there.

Any suggestions that wont be very costly are appreciated.

The basic idea is just one of those white buckets with the handle removed, and a grated cup in the top of it somehow, like yours, with those rock things in them. Theres a spigot (sp) on the side to drain the water, and a bubbler like you have.

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking I'll grow one mother plant in soil, a clone chamber, and 3 or so of these buckets. That way I can keep a cycle going.

Thinking about this brings up some questions...

Can plants that are kept in soil be transplanted to hydro?

How long are clones able to be kept in clone chaimbers. If I have say 3 buckets, How could I get a cycle going so that I harvest a plant like once every month or so. Could this mean i need more buckets, or what.

If I can transplant them from soil into hydro, would you mind showing me?

If not, how do I plant germinated seeds into the hydro rocks?

Ahh, so many questions, and you better like my drawing cause it took me like 20 minutes.

Thanks so much to anyone that can find time to answer,
Munch

Couple other things I just thought of...

How do you make the hole from the bubbler tube water proof. Obviously there needs to be an airtight seal.

What are the names of the things I keep referring to as hydro rocks?

Thx again,
Munch

hey i'm pretty new to hydro myself and learned most from here....if my memory serve's me right agent86 would be a good search for you...but i have no problem share'n what i have learned here....

here's a better pic

1/2 inch drain on the bottom, airpump taped to the side wraped in reflective tape.

the lid i got at my local hydro shop made just for a 5 gallon bucket with 6 inch netpot

i ran the air hose thru the bottom this time but had to use tons of hot glue to stop the leaks....you can just run the air lines above water and all will be ok......oh look i need to do a res. change

I allso cut a nice big hole in the top so i could get samples and top up with out remove'n the lid...reflective tape keeps it closed up and light tight

here's a close up of the air lines.....tons of glue.....better to go thru the top...i tape my air lines to keep light out

sure.....i just pop them out of the container and rinse all the dirt off with warm water and transplant to hydroton.(the clay balls)....the plant will most likely go into shock for a few days... i'm 2 for 3 this way

I'm not a seed grower but have seen many threads on it....seems most use rockwool or rapid rooters.....a search of both will be a good read.....CLICK ME

think i spent about 25 bucks for everything

the search button works great here.....you will find tons to read trust me,i have been reading it for 5 months.....

hope i help'd some...

good luck
