Hello, Im putting together a simple bubbler and based on past headches want to implement a drain valve of some sort to make nutrient changes easier. Any PROS want to give me a hand, I thought of a few ideas, but there always seems to be a hang-up. What type of parts would I need? Where would I install the drain valve, bottom or side? What is the best sealant to prevent leaks? Any help is appreciated.

I prefer to have my drains in the side so I can set the tub down flat. And the little bit of water that stays in there (if you don't keep it filled ie: aero, fill & drain) isn't a problem for me. This works on Rubbermaids and I don't see why it can't work on buckets either. What I use is a 3/4" PVC slip to NPT (National Pipe Thread) through a 1" hole. The threads fit very snugly and need to be pushed through. On either side of the wall you are passing through, I put a rubber o-ring that fits the threads tightly (Viton O-rings will withstand the harsh conditions better than regular, but are more expensive and harder to find locally.) and doesn't slip over the threads. The o-ring thickness is usually best if it's of medium thickness. I put this galvanized metal ring on the outside ONLY (acid water and galvanized don't get along. Something about zinc leaching into the water.) Then I screw a threaded female hose connector over the threads, which have been teflon taped of course, and you're done. In the pic you see the threaded male part with the o-ring. The horrible drawing is supposed to be where your wall is. On the other side is the second o-ring. You can see the metal ring with the divit in the center. This holds the o-ring in place. After taping the threads, you can screw on the female part and you're done. I added the prices so you could see about how much it costs you.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I just used the through hull fitting on a bubbler bucket and attached a 2' length of flex hose. Just use 2 TieWraps to put a 180 degree bend in the top to keep light out. Works great for filling as well as draining. I've done the same to the totes I use for nursery bubblers. Airedog
