I'm not a dirt farmer but i don't see a whole lot good about your water. I think we both have to bite the bullet and get a reverse osmosis system. I live in a place where the local water is so hard even the old cowboys buy ro to make there coffee with. Fortunatly we have automatic water vending machines on almost every corner and at a quarter a gallon it's cheap enough but i'm getting tired of lugging those 5 gallon containers upstairs. FMJ

Hi Fillabong

That water is not bad at all. The worst aspect is the amount of Na.

You shouldn't have to worry about -Ca, or -S, but the Ca isn't enough to seriously interfere with Mg.

Mine is ~630ppm @ pH 7.8 with very high Ca, and it works great in soil and hydro with nutes formualted for hardwater.

I have really bad water and went with Reverse Osmosis. If you can afford the system I highly recommend it.

Conversions: 70 ppm to 50 ppm = 1 CF = 0.1 EC and 5 ml = 5 cc = 1 teaspoon

I talked to my county office. They gave me some papaework and 2 plastic jars. I filled them up and dropped them off at the office again. In two weeks I had a chemical and biological report.

and FMJ. My drinking water is RO but I buy those 5 gallon jugs also. I'll buy an RO unit when I can afford one

thanks penguin. I can add a little phosphoric acid to drop that pH and so long as the Ca won't restrict Mg then things should be ok.

Hey you're telling me that the ppm's can be that high? i'm sitting at 8 Ph and 450 PPM...i use my PPM meter, and it tells me that with nuts i'm sitting at 1200 (yikes) can you tell me how to cacluate this with the 450 in it?? I don't trust the drinking water here, but i want to make sure my babies are getting enough without being stunted.....soon i will be purchasing a distiller or a RO machine.,....but until then, i want to make certain i'm using my equipment right for my babies....i also have the ph meter...so....can you tell me how i can best caculate the nutes even with water that already has PPM's in it?

i figured this is kinda related to the question...so i posted it here....

thanks guys,
Cat

If you're on a municipal water supply in the US you should be able to get a water analysis from the water company. If you have well water, you may be able to get it test at a county extension, or by a private well water testing service.

I am not a big fan of RO because of the high waste:usable ratio (usually around 4:1). What do you do with your waste water? And RO systems are pretty high-maintenance. Hauling in distilled or RO water is pretty impractical in hydro. And water with low TDS has pH stability issues Finally there are a lot trace elements in tap water that are non-essential bit still useful. So I will always use tap water unless its absolutely impossible. My tap water is considered "liquid rock," and I still get excellent results in hydro and soil.

Catheriena, I'd recommend using nutes formulated for hardwater. Calculate the nute ppm of your solution by subtracting your source water ppm. If your solution is 1200ppm, and your tap water is 450ppm, then your solution provides nutes at 750ppm.

penguin..

Ah thanks babe...(hugs) i hadn't asked this question because i didn't have a tds meter until about three weeks ago...but now i'm like "whoa...how do i know exactly what i have going in there." Now i know..(grin)...i like my tap water also....it seems to work okay for my babies....i just want to make certain i'm not going to overfeed them and make them yellow..*pout*...okay..thanks hon for the reply..and until my water is absolutely bad....i will try to use what i've got...(grin)

*pout*...well i have about 500 bucks worth of nutes right now..so perhaps i'll consider that after these are done....i didn't even know they made them for hard water....i just though you had to pay attention to whether it's chelted(sp) nutrients or not....

okay thanks babe!
