Very nice. I have a similar setup for my (5) mothers. Even though there is a small drop between the return and the res, I add more DO by adding a couple jets of water that shoot into the res as well. I think the only advantage might be that I can shrink my system down a few inches. Whats the height from floor to the top of the bucket?

How big of a pump do you think I would need if I were to make this system with only two or three buckets? Where did you buy your pump from and how was the shipping/handeling costs and effiecency?

hello jane

to determine the size of your pump you must remember that you need to exchange/ recirculate all the water at least 10 times/ hour therefore:

3 buckets = 15 gal
res = ? lets say 10 gallon {needs to be deep enough to make a good splash}......thats 25 gallon times 10 changeouts per hour = 250 gph pump

I would recomend to buy the next larger size or two.....so you should be looking for a 350gph to a 500gph pump......a in line magnectic pump is what I would recomend.....less heat produced, longer pump life, most reliable and allows for the expansion of a bucket or two if you should so desire, oh plus you won't over tax the pump

I found my pump though the yellow pages at my local garden center that carries pond supplies......if you wish to buy on line many of the online hydro stores sell them.....or you can do a google search for 500gph pond pump...or what ever size you desire, minimum 250gph recomended 350 to 500gph

oh yes pump effiecency thats why I also recomend a magnetic pump most effiencent

if you decide to do this system with only a few buckets I strongly recomend a res as large as you can......the greater the extra volume above and bheond what you need will increase the stability of the system and give you a more problem free system

I'm now in day 12 of flower {grow link in sig} and have yet to do a res change.....I even went straight from veg to flower without a problem...check out the attachments for some current grow pics......

my base is a upside down bucket a one inch board and then the bucket so i think total height was 25 inches......the only way I could lower the system is to use a shorter res tank......current waterfall = 12 inches I think 8 inches would work well with the volume of water I'm moving......giving me 4 more inches of height.......but I did not know this until after I saw my system in operation....to late now

I'm in the layout process for my moms and veg cab now....this system should keep moms very well

You could also shorten your water fall if you put a splash plate in there. Something that sits above the water level for your water fall to land on and cause it to disperse more, increasing its absorbtion of O by increasing its surface area.

great system Daltron. Thanks for giving the how to on its design.

A splash plate...what a great simple idea and you know how i feel about KISS ......the plate will disperse the solution creating a greater amount of oxygen for the system also by adjusting the tilt and angle of the plate you could create different dispersion patterns finding the pattern that best fits the shape and size of your res.

I chose a different solution to my dispersion question.......in the pic below...my last piece of PVC pipeing is a 45 degree 4" elbow, sealed in place with a upwards tilt of about 45%............

this cause's the solution to exit the return line - 4 inches wide.....impacts a width of 18 inches wide on the surface of the nute solution { Res is 18 " wide see pic impact zone is from back to front of res } with the full velocity coming off of a 16 foot run with a 6 inch drop in height and the volume of 14 buckets behind it creates a waterfall so great that I am losing solution when it splashes out side of the res .....maybe one to 2 liters/day just from splashing.....but giving me that fresh air transfer of oxygen that is so so important to the succesful operation of the system.....and this is why I prebuilt plastic walls and floor all the way around the res area....

To keep everything cold and dry

this reminds me why I like questions....I've done so many little things in building this system, like the angle of 45 degree elbow giving the system a 3 times increase in DO.......you ask and I remember...wow must be something wrong with my short term memory

Very nice daltron...

... You caught my attention. One quetsion though. Since I like to max out my plants with a high nute concentration at all times to grow large plants, would this kill off the BB? Also would running the system 24/7 at all times (to get the most DO to the roots ) be a problem? Very nice concept you have...
