Best size netpot for E/F SoG
permalink

How big a net pot should I plan on for a SoG flowering setup? I'm growing mothers in DWC elsewhere and I'm going to flower out ~6" tall clones in a SoG setup using E/F. I'm using netpots with hydroton media in a 15x40 tray. I'm OK if the roots grow together a little bit towards the end. I'd like to use the smallest net pot I can get away with, so I can maximize the number of clones per tray. My choices right now are:

3"
3.75"
5"

Pictures of each:

Whaddya think?

Hi GH

I'd recommend starting with 3 plants per square foot, that density, and tweaking density based on the results of the first few runs. Your trays are approximately 4 square feet, so that would be 12 plants per tray. I'd go with 5" net pots.

Thx penguin. What are the negative results of a higher number of plants/sf?

They can crowd each other out, promoting stretch, cutting off air flow within the canopy, and generally reducing yield. Optimium density really depends on the growth habit. For example, C-Town and St0ney have been growing some Burmese Delight that looks perfect for 4 plants per square foot. I've had some branchy sativas that don't SOG very well; I veg those longer and train pretty aggressively. I've had some indica doms that have a pretty low calyx/leaf ratio, with a lot of big fat leaves, the canopy gets very dense and I got best results wtih about 2-2.5 plants/sf.

Best height to induce flowering also depends on how much they tend to stretch, and the wattage of the lamp(s). For super stretchers (like White Label White Widow or anything Haze), smaller is definitely better, but for less stretchy genetics under 1000w you might want to induce at 12" to make the most of the penetration power.
