ahoy hoy,

is there any reason not to use taller, narrower 5 gallon buckets for a bubbling bucket system, rather than the standard squat painter's bucket? how much does a plant's root system bush out to the sides, generally? i'm sure you've guessed i'm asking because of space concerns, and a desire to maximize my footage. who doesn;t like footage? i've got plenty of height but not too much depth in my prospective garden, so i can afford to trade away a few inches per bucket of diameter for a few in height...as long as it's not detrimental to the wellness of the plants.

thanks again
have fun,

gurt x wedgeworth

Should work fine. You should even be able to use 3 gallon buckets. Do a search on SWC.

Hi gorp,

Welcome to gardenscure.

My only concern with using taller, narrower containers is the stability of the plant once it gets into heavy flowering. It all depends on how large you grow your plants also. But you can prepare for it if you know it's coming? With some experimentation, I agree it should be fine.

All the best,
Lollie

hi, gorp, i was just randomly reading posts and found this. at wal-mart, in the pet food area, are pet food storage containers that might be ideal for you. there are two sizes, one 3 gal and one 6 gal. the 6 gal one is 24" high. it's lid dimensions are 8 1/2 x 13 1/4 inches. you could get a net pot up to 6" in the top. the tops are also gasketed with quick release latches. later

I like taller reservoirs in order to give me a little cushion for ph and ppm fluctuations. If you are going dwc and connecting them all, it won't make as big a diffference. Yet, any size works.

Hi -
Been growing soil for a while now, thinking about the next project - going to be a DWC system methinks. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

So just to clarify - say I'm growing clones (no history of hermaphroditism, so not too worried about tangled roots) and training with lst, theoretically I could grow say 6 plants in two rows of three (all one big tank) training the tops outwards (while anchoring the stems), having the root system tall and narrow, and the shoot system short and bushy?

And has anyone had much success with training in DWC?

Thanks!
