I want to start using grow bags in my current Op. Tell me, do you need to be really careful with them as not to disturb the roots or does the packed soil lend them turgidity? Also, do you put lava rocks in the bottom to give some drainage or does it do fine on its own?

![]() | I'm using 1 gallon grow-bags in my current grow. I'm growing three Northern Lights #5 and have been pleased with the bags so far. I haven't finished out the grow yet though, so my opinion may change later. The soil does help them stay up. I've had no problems with soil spilling out. I also like the "moldable-ness" of them, I could put more of them into a given space due to that. I also like their cost, very cheap, and weight while storing, practically none. Lastly I like the fact that when I'm done I can just toss them and not have to clean them out for re-use, like I would with a plastic pot. They do have some downsides though. They require slightly more care in handling since their sides aren't rigid. They also are a little small for a full-sized plant, though they'd be fine for a SOG. Finally I'm starting to think that MJ does best in a very deep pot for it's diameter, think bud-vase not bucket. The grow-bags are closer to normal flower-pot dimensions than I'd like for that purpose. But in general I'd give them a thumbs up.

Is a one gallon grow bag equal to a one gallon pot? In other words, do you or any reason get more flexibility with "pot" size with grow bags, or is one gallon just one gallon regardless? Hope that question doesn't seem rediculous. THC

![]() | A gallon is a gallon is a gallon. No size difference, just easier to mold into a space than a pot.

I appreciate it. Tells me that for this grow, I will not use the bags. I am ready to transplant pretty soon, and I know if I go with 1 gallon, I will have to do it again. I think I will use them for my seedlings next time and see if I like them. Again, thank you for your help. THC

![]() | I just transplanted 1 week old plants from 16oz cups to 2gallon grow bags ($.22 each - hard to find). I placed the grow bags into a perfect sized box (6 per box) to keep the soil from moving around. The stems grew long in the cups, so I burried most of the stem as well. I also snapped th base of the stem before transplanting. So far (24 hours later), no signs of damage or shock. Nothing but further growth. Sweet.
