It' extremely difficult to duplicate mother nature .... instant on timers for lights, fans all the time, heaters or AC, humidifiers, dehumidifiers ... what would appear to be perfect conditions This is what we stride for .. a steady constant environment.
And they still hermie on occasion (not sigh actually, if I'm able to regain the strain ... ) ...... My 5 blueberry seeds came from a stable line that goes back 15 years or so ... ended up with only six beans over a three year period growing strictly clones, and they weren't even sighted in the jungle while flowering ... or even in the trim process!

Perhaps this hermie phenomenon should be discussed further in a new thread .... any takers??

Ok according to the following:

Ethylene Gas C2H4

An apple produces a higher amount of Ethylene gas.

Also, I figure if your doing this as a business producing clones in a legal environment. Meaning overseas not here in the States...you could call a company like Airgas and just buy a cylinder of Ethylene and have a regulator and release a few times a day.

But using a Banana peel and the seeds...this makes the seeds females...so why not use pure Ethylene if your producing female seeds...this is also something to think about.

There isn't a guess if this works anymore, its already been done before according to Wiki.

Ethylene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Ethylene acts physiologically as a hormone in plants.[12][13] It exists as a gas and acts at trace levels throughout the life of the plant by stimulating or regulating the ripening of fruit, the opening of flowers, and the abscission (or shedding) of leaves. Its biosynthesis starts from methionine with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) as a key intermediate.
This statement here also confirms this.

Quote:
In 1935, Crocker proposed that ethylene was the plant hormone responsible for fruit ripening as well as inhibition of vegetative tissues (Crocker, 1935).
Quote:
List of Plant Responses to Ethylene

* Seedling triple response, thickening and shortening of hypocotyl with pronounced apical hook. This thought to be a seedlings reaction to an obstacle in the soil such a stone, allowing it to push past the obstruction.
* In pollination, when the pollen reaches the stigma, the precursor of the ethylene, ACC, is secreted to the petal, the ACC releases ethylene with ACC oxidase.
* Stimulates leaf and flower senescence
* Stimulates senescence of mature xylem cells in preparation for plant use
* Inhibits shoot growth except in some habitually flooded plants like rice
* Induces leaf abscission
* Induces seed germination
* Induces root hair growth – increasing the efficiency of water and mineral absorption
* Induces the growth of adventitious roots during flooding
* Stimulates epinasty – leaf petiole grows out, leaf hangs down and curls into itself
* Stimulates fruit ripening
* Induces a climacteric rise in respiration in some fruit which causes a release of additional ethylene. This can be the one bad apple in a barrel spoiling the rest phenomenon.
* Affects neighboring individuals
* Disease/wounding resistance
* Triple response when applied to seedlings – stem elongation slows, the stem thickens, and curvature causes the stem to start growing horizontally. This strategy is thought to allow a seedling grow around an obstacle
* Inhibits stem growth outside of seedling stage
* Stimulates stem and cell broadening and lateral branch growth also outside of seedling stage
* Synthesis is stimulated by auxin and maybe cytokinin as well
* Ethylene levels are decreased by light
* The flooding of roots stimulates the production of ACC which travels through the xylem to the stem and leaves where it is converted to the gas
* Interference with auxin transport (with high auxin concentrations)
* Inhibits stomatal closing except in some water plants or habitually flooded ones such as some rice varieties, where the opposite occurs (conserving CO2 and O2)
* Where ethylene induces stomatal closing, it also induces stem elongation
* Induces flowering in pineapples
So its already been proven. Enough said. I know I'll be using it to guarantee my plants to be female.

I also found this on another website...so we might not have to go through all that trouble after all.

Quote:
there's a product called "Sensa-Spray" that is used to induce flowering in plants ( aka marijuana). you mix the spray solution with water then spray it onto the plants. the product activates when it is mixed with water, decomposing into ethylene gas.
its about $20 for a 2oz bottle which makes 2 quarts of solution. a simple google search using the search phrase "Sensa-Spray" will yield alot of sites that sell it.

try adding some to the water that you use in your jars. the gas will build up in your jars creating a nice ethylene filled environment. or put a glass of water into your growbox and add a few drops of sensa-spray to the water everyday.
I normally don't post or read over at IC, and I found some more information there. According to a few, using a Sensa-Spray mixture with water, and soaking seeds lead to 100% females. That was 4 seeds per germ. For a total of 5 germinations. So 20 seeds total. All ended up being female. That's a good number and would be hard to get no males in 20. The odds are against you.

Quote:
I use a product called Sensa -Soak It contains a product called ethylene I get about 9/10 fem when using this combined with another product called Sensa-Spray .The spray is usedf at the start of flowering and then once more in 10 days time .(It really makes the plants wilt and if you have a breed which is a bit Hermy It seems to repress maleness and realy bring femaleness to the for.
Oh and you can get Sensa-Soak here. PLANT HORMONES

Its an Australian company though...the product costs roughly 30.00 USD and 35.00 in AUD.

I couldn't find it anywhere else. Damn that was a lot of typing

Oh, come on jdubya! There's no surer way to fuck up a religion than introducing science! Hell, we haven't even figured out whether we're Bananists or Bananans and you're already working to split us into Reform and Orthodox!

Interesting chart, btw. I clearly remember the produce company's info showing bananas and tomatoes as the strongest emitters, but that chart has them at medium. Hmm... maybe they were just trying to sell more produce?

Maybe it's an apple a day that keeps the boys away?

Ohno... SCHISM!

Ok, the bananas are gone now. They did there thing from day 21 to 35 so we will see what happens. Now for my question: pre-flowers? I did a search here in the forum on the topic but found no definitive answers to what to look for. Can somebody point me in the direction of some good educational reading?

Thanks,

JJ

Just look for balls that look like itty-bitty grapes and look for white hairs (pistils)

Look here, this is from my first grow a while back.

That's a male in early development. They can develop a lot faster than females and you need to be able to differentiate between the two quickly as a male can ruin your crop quickly.

Good luck.

Anyway back to the banana stuff...I'm waiting on my seeds...I think Nirvana is messed up, I tried to email them and haven't gotten a response in 72 hours and I can't login to my account...WTF.

{mod note: no hookups allowed} ...PM me if you want.

I just wanted to pop in and share that my one plant out of two that made it is a female. I'd like to give the banana credit. Can't really say for sure but I believe too! All my seedlings will receive the banana treatment from now on. Thanks Cheese!

bluecheese, your the best Being a here in the group I am here to learn from those more experienced. Some of my questions might be off a bit like the search thing, seems I mis typed "preflowers" for "pre flowers" during my search for info. Hats off to you my friend for the information.

So I took each and every plant out of the garden this morning to inspect them. Of the 19 plants there are 11 that are showing pistills clearly (female). There are none that I can see that are showing signs of a stamin (male), the remaining 8 are showing the stipule but no other signs of sex.

19 plants:
11 female
8 undetermined

Will update next Sunday,

JJ

Good morning all ..... have an update on the gender status, and things are looking pretty good Of course I might be off on the count here +-1 ..... you know, having to count over 20 (fingers and toes ) seems to screw me up .... over and over again ..... anyway, this is how the cards fell:

Confirmed Females:
CC - 1
VTII - 2
HS x JF - 4
AK47 - 2
Hash Plant - 3
Blueberry - 6
SS - 1
total ................... 19

slaughtered males:
HS x JF - 4
Hash Plant - 1
AK47 - 3

undecided:
HS x JF - 1
AK47 - 1

I suspect the two remaining undecided plants will be female considering in my experience, males show sooner than females .... and we are at nearly seven weeks now

So ... 65% females, 28% males, 7% undecided.

or ..... if we look at it optimistically ... and the undecided are in fact procrastinating bitches
72% females, 28% males.

Thanks bc for starting this thread .... I'm convinced. This is the highest ratio I've ever had
