symptoms? well, they're easier to overfertilize, they need water constantly and the growth is stunted...
to find out if they are root bound carefully lift them out of the pot. if the roots have reached the edge of the pot and begun to grow across the surface of the soil mass, you're in danger of being root bound.

Transplant it to a bigger pot! Fill the new larger pot with a little bit of soil, then put the dirt/root mass of the plant into the new pot, then fill in around the sides. Be sure to water soon after repotting.

Question Cut roots or not (before flowering)?
permalink

Hi everbody

I have two BIG Mommas (a 90% Indica Strain), one year old each, vegged from seeds, in 8" pots + root bound. Eventually, I will flower them (I have clones + small moms backup). Two weeks before, I will transplant her.

---------
When I will transplant them:

Is it better to CUT all the roots all around? (just before I will put them in their new soil + new pots).
or
Is it better to put them "as is", with all the roots around, in the new soil ?
---------

To cut or not??? (before transplanting + flowering)

Thankx !

IMHO, for the unexperienced just stick the whole thing in a bigger pot and fill in with new soil. Press down lightly when full and keep on growin'

For the more experienced, I would advise trimming the roots before the transplant. I generally trim maybe a 1/4" - 1/2" on all the sides and the bottom then pop it into a new pot and soil. I use a big ass serated chefs knife in a light sawing motion to do the trimming and to not disturb the main root ball. You can even use the same pot once you get a hang of it and keep it growing.
