I just got my MH light today and thought I had a pretty nice flowering chamber under construction when I realized something.... I don't think I have enough room to grow!!!!!!!!

First timers be careful when building your setup!

My room is 2x3x4. So 4 feet tall, after installing my light which takes up about 1.3' of space, and my planters which will probable take up the same amount of vertical space. I'm left with 1.4' to grow my plants!!!! Actually less than that since you can't put a 250watt MH right up on top of the plants.

It's a good thing you can't use foul language on this site because right about now is when you'd see me just light it up....

Anyway, any suggestions on what would be the best way to tackle this problem? Other than resizing my box or buying a new light that sits sideways. I'm using those for my last options.

Pic below is what WAS my nice room

Good luck (to me),

I have 5 plants, but only plan on keeping the best 3 maybe 4 if I can swing it.

The other problem I seem to have even if I beat the grow room issue is heat. Even with that exhaust and 2 fans it was 96f in that room when I tested a few minutes ago.

So, now it goes from a height to heat issue. Any thoughts on that? I'd like to try and keep it no warmer than 85f. Any ideas would be apprecaited.

dm0ca, just noticed you had a journal, I'll have to check it out. What are you using for exhaust and what's the average temp in your setup?

Thanks,

nitrous

Well, for now I'm just going to keep them where they are, I have some time to think about how I'm going to takle my problem. I thought about cutting the top so the light could go up higher, and then using 6" high planters that hold 3 gallons of soil to keep those lower to the ground. That will increase space by about 1.9 feet which is plenty if I train my plants.

I'm actually more worried about the heat issue since my closet now gets up to 96.5 f degrees.

And there's no way I'm killin those lil babies, not unless I find a male in the lot

Thanks for the input,
nitrous

scrog - might be the easiest solution for the height problem

try putting that fan on the left to right of the light and blow the air around the light to the exhaust fans

I figured out what I have to do. Cut the top of my box so that the light fits up higher giving me about 1.3' growing space, plus I'll use 6" deep pots that hold at least 3 gallons of soil in them which will save me another 6" in space increasing grow room space enough to grow my plants. However even with additional grow space I'll have to train my plants. Don't think I'll scrog, think I'll LST.

Heat is an issue now, I'm not sure how I'll get the temp down 10 degrees. Currently the high is 96.6f. Ideas?

Same issue for me

I also have a 4' height restriction (including lights & pots). My plan is to buy the slimmest light possible, and use short pots. Also plan to use LST.

As for the heat, I plant to vent from just under the light. You could increase fan size to vent more air. It's plain physics. But, you have to make sure you can supply enough fresh air or the fans will not move the air you think.

Can you pull air in from somewhere? To the point where you can exhaust enough to keep the heat down? Do some experiments.

I'm very interested in your thread.

Unfortunately most grow rooms lack the proper environment to apply "plain physics". We can buy lights, fans, soil, etc... but there are a few things one can't substitute (at least not in a cost effective way). Fresh air in, and old air out.

At any rate my grow room is getting enough fresh air, what I'm going to do next is invest in a $10 hurricane fan, they move a TON of air and are pretty small. I'll mount that in a box and make it air tight around the fan, then I'll put it in the grow room and attach it to my exhaust hose and see if that sucks out more air at a faster rate than my current 50cfm exhaust fan. I don't think 50cfm is near enough for my particular grow area. I know there are cage fans and better exhaust fans out there for just $80-$90 bucks but I'll try the handy man approach first.

But in the end I don't think I'll see dramatic results because the room is always around 83f anyway, and that's the air that gets pushed into the grow area. Nothing I can do to cool the air down even though my home has central air-conditioning. That’s the only room in the house that doesn’t get very cool for some reason. Maybe it’s the 5 computers, full size Konica copier, full size Lexmark printer, and Iguana cage that has 2 flo lights and a sunlamp that make it so warm in there

Anyway it’s the only place my wife will let me grow, and I agree that it’s the safest since I can vent through the roof, and I never allow guests (or clients) in my home office.

Thanks for the input,
nitrous

Sounds good

Sounds like you have things in hand. By "plain physics", I meant the air flow & heat exchange. Just remember that to vent properly, you need enough air intake to replace what you vent. Then, viola! Air flow and heat exchange.

As for heat, I've read that if your light has a glass lens and you vent air from between the bulb and lens, heat is greatly reduced. Not sure how to quantify it.

I'll be tracking your progress to see what I can learn. I'll be building my grow room this summer (planning it now).
