Question 1000watt Light Cooling: Whats the better solution?
permalink

Ok.... to start I am just setting up my grow space so I wanted to do it right from the start.

Grow Space:

Width: 2 ft
Length: 4.5 ft
Height: 6 ft

First off, which fan should I buy that will cool my 1000watt HPS properly through a Kool Tube reflector? The hurricane 4" 109CFM fan for $132, or the 6" 309CFM fan for $152? The Kool Tube reflector is 6" in diameter, but is 309CFMs overkill, or just right? Plus how much more noisy is the 309 vs. 109?

On to the real question.
Basically there are two ways I could go about intaking and exhausting the lights heat.

1) have the ducting suck in air from the outside (75 degrees approx) and exhuast it through the top. Along with 1 intake and 2 exhausts for the setup's circulation.

OR

2) have the ducting suck air from the inside (temp unknown) of the grow space and exhausting the air out the top. And with this setup only having one exhaust fan for the setup, cuz the light's fan will be exhausting air, and having two intakes.

lets just throw one more in there

3) Do the same as step 2, but without any additional exhaust fans, because the light's fan is exhausting 309 CFMs, and have either 1 fan for intake or just a passive Vent with large holes?

The heat exhausted from the light will recirculate into the same area, so the outside temps will probably go up a bit considering the light is like a 1000watt heater. So maybe it is better to have the light suck air from inside the grow space, because the grow space sucks air in from down low. Or should I have the intake for the light be down low like the intake for the setup? I dunno. I am getting a bit detail overloaded right now.... Time to move on

First is a picture of the kool tube, without reflector attached, then I will attach a diagram of option 1 and 2

Thanks for any comments or suggestions, they always stimulate thought

I am leaning towards Option 2 because that will require a few less fans for circulation inside the grow space. I have all the fans, but would rather not have all the noise.. What is better in terms of temperature, because that is all that really matters?

Cheers

I would have to say option 1 For some reason it just looks more effective. Also, this is a great question for a post Crapon. I am dealing with the same problem. Great plans you have there. I'll post a copy of mine when i'm done. Maybe we can help each other.
Best of luck..

need more better choices

diagram 2 will be prone to humidity in the bulb cooling tube and thats not good it the water manages to condensate there will be a big pop

look at my thread" a look at uncles grow box" and see my solution to three bulbs totalling 900 watts your box is smaller than mine and will have greater heat

i am using six computer fans and an air conditioner I maintain 80'f all the time plants are very happy

but if given only your two choices

I would prefer the use of diagram one the bulb is directly cooled and not exposed to dirt dust and humidity

if the circulaton is great enough and heat transfer from the bulb efficient enough it may work

believe it or not if you use too much fan on the bulb the thermal transfer of heat to air will fall way off because the air just flies by the bulb and doesent have physical time to remove the heat

If you want to get rid of heat I would go with option 1. Heat rises ; having more exhaust on top would help displace more heat than just blowing more air inside. If you want it a bit more quiet I would use multiple, lower cfm fans. Much quieter

plus more exhaust will benifit plant health if you are concerned with lack of exhaust

Im sick of big ass hoods that create too much heat
