Talking Designing A Killa Cabinet - Input Greatly Appreciated!!
permalink

Hello folks,

This initial message is just to create the thread and give you headz a heads-up that I'll be posting my drawings and specs over the next day. I started a grow journal and realized that I needed to handle construction, lighting and grow medium before I could take that thread anywhere...

Silly Newbie.

Anyway, in a nutshell...

I am renting and my landlord pays the electricity so I'd like to keep the setup below 1kW (1000W). That being said, I am going out on a limb and trying a full EVL setup (gimme props mist + 86!!)

The size I'm toying with currently for the entire case is:

3ft Deep x 4ft Wide x 5ft High

1ft width will be used for storage compartments and (eventually) mommy and clone growth so my grow room area is 3 x 3 x 5

I am far from a monster toker and do not plan on letting too many friends in on my endeavour so my required yeild is not that much.

1) Do y'all think this is a good setup for my needs/limitations?

As I said, I will begin posting designs as soon as I draw them up.

2) Would everyone rather see a consolidated view of all of the drawings at my external journal or one at a time in the context of the thread (also, Mods - am I breaking rules by linking to an external site?)

You can see the room I'm working with by going to my Geocities journal. The cab will go where the dresser currently is placed.

Thanks in advance - wish me luck!

Floor Plan

Ok,

So I taped off the square footage to get an better idea of size and my initial response was that the grow room was too big and the secondary compartment too narrow.

So the measurements taped out here are as follows:

Storage/Mommie Nest
18" wide x 30" deep x 56" high

Growth Area
30" wide x 30" deep x 56" high

here are the pix...

Here's a shot of the floorplan leaving 6" of air space in the back and righthand sides of the cab.

Here's one shot from further back that shows a notch of black tape at the intended 56" height.

So,

All that being said, I really don't know my arse from a hole in the ground

I did a phototron grow a few years back but was not fully commited. All of the great people on this site have really instilled a drive in me to get this right.

What I'm trying to get at is... PLEASE don't hold back. You have an idea of my required yield, the constraints of my space and my commitment to the project. All feedback is greatly appreciated and I am more than willing for this to be a *collaboration* for all HC.com headz

I'd rather get it right (and most efficient, and quietest, and coolest, etc...) the first time around.

Much love....

Options abound...

So I've a few cabinet options to work on...

1) IKEA Children's Wardrobe
Pros: Easy to install, relatively cheap, looks purdy
Cons: Closest IKEA is not close at all, Customer Service is horrendous - I'd have to drive up there on faith that they'd even have the item.

2) Used Furniture / Unpainted Furniture shops

3) BYO (Build your own)

My building partner (bbqchowchow - trying to convince him to sign up ) has veered me towards the used furniture stores as a starting point. Our thoughts being that since we don't own a table saw, we'd have to rely on someone else's wood cuts which means our specs better be bang on... maybe too many error points on this one.

So... I'm off to some stores. I'll post pics if they let me take em

Cheers...

Sorry folks - testing a sig and I accidentally posted (oops!)

I'll edit it later with some more pertinent info

Ok - more pertinent info...

My ideal size (thanks to Agent86 on assisting with the sqftage) would be...

26" Deep x 38" Wide x 60" High.

That gives me room for a small side room for storage and the like, it's shallow enough that I can open doors from the front, it's high enough that I'd get 48" of growroom (right?)

ok. NOW I'm off to the stores

I can see thoughts starting to gel here. That size is quite nice, do you have an idea how many evl watts you'll be adding and what you're DWC will be (e.g. single tub bubbler)? Also, since that's a bedroom, are you worried about sound?

Hey Europa,

Thanks for your input here and elsewhere... You guys all rock! As for the issues you brought up...

tobi is suggesting that, for my needs, (single guy w/ a few friends to provide for) - if directed towards the right strain, I'd be quite content with one plant. That being said, I am still learning the bubbler lingo and practice.

Well, again - I am new to the whole process but ready to dive in head first! I liked the results that Agent86 was able to garner from his 4x96W overhead reflector plus 2X26W bottom lights. I believe (if I understood him correctly) he had 2 full spectrum overheads on 24/0 for veggie stage and 2 full spect + 2 warm red spect overheads on 12/12 for flowering. (please correct me if I'm wrong)

As for the single tub bubbler, my inherent fear of my own lack of ability makes me want to crowd 2 plants into that 4.5 sqft space but I'm guessing that's not the best plan.

The noise is less of an issue on *this* floor as it's my bedroom and the space is actually off to the side. I'll be throwing up a curtain into that room as well. The noise does become an issue if the downstairs neighbors are bothered. They are good people but I'd rather not have to explain to them why it sounds like I'm running an aquarium shop in my bedroom

I love the true collaborative nature of this whole process! Thanks again to eveyone for their comments. Keep 'em coming!! I am a sponge for HC knowledge

This one's attractive. And the sizing is just about right (enough to carve out a mommie room off the side).

21D x 34W x 60.25H

Sadly, it's about twice as much as the ikea wardrobe and who knows if I could find it locally. Not to mention the fact that you'd have to hack out all of this computer oriented junk and rebuild the interior.

If anyone else is working in a similar size realm to me...

i.e. 24D x 36W x 60H

The closest I have been able to come has been refered to as a "TV Armoire" It's deeper than a bookshelf, higher than a dresser and shorter than a standard armoire.

Cheers...
