Transplanting 101
permalink

Here are eight Neville's Haze plants (sativas) that are 32 days old. They are clearly in need of bigger pots, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to show the newbies an easy, safe way to transplant a plant. Don't stress over moving your plants.... they are fairly resilient, and will do fine provided you follow a few instructions. I'd like it if no one commented until I got all the steps done.... if you don't mind

Rule number one is to get all of your supplies ready before you start. That way you won't have a plant laying there with its roots exposed only to find out that you lost your perlite or forgot to buy enough potting mix. Get every conceivable thing together, get the soil all mixed up, and have water available.

Fill the new pots to a level that will put the finished repot at the same soil level as before. You actually can pot marijuana deeper than it was previously, but if you are nervous or not good with plants, put it at the same level. You can do this step with the plant still in the old pot, to keep it easy.

Cover the surface of the soil with your hand, and don't bend the stem. Your hand is there just to catch the root mass as it comes clear of the pot. Yep- your hands will get really dirty It's fun.

Flip the pot upside down. If the soil won't come free, bang on the bottom of the pot with your free hand, but don't pull it by the stem. You'll lose a bit of soil, but that's ok- the rootball will hold together and come out cleanly and with little breakage. If it does break a bit, don't panic- just finish potting calmly. Your plant can lose a few roots and survive very easily.

Here is a nicely formed rootball. The roots have reached the limits of the old pot, and will be happy for the new accomodations. I don't consider this a rootbound plant- just ready for new digs. If it were rootbound, the roots would be circling round and round in a mass, and would need to be broken apart a bit before repotting.

Set the plant in its new pot, and begin to fill in around the edges with your previously prepared potting mix. Pack it in fairly well- you don't want any air pockets left in the soil. Make sure that all of the old rootmass is covered with the new soil- if it settles too much you can add more later. Don't forget to transfer any plant ID tags you might have!

Now water the plant, and soak it really well. You are eliminating air pockets, and helping the soil to settle. If you are working in very bright sun, put the plant in a semi-shady location while you finish the rest of the plants.

Put all the plants in a semi-shady location ( or under lower light indoors) for the rest of the day. Make sure they are all watered really well, and spritz the leaves with plain water if you felt any roots tear while you were moving them. That's it! You're done.

Don't forget to clean up your mess!!
Check the plants throughout the day to check for drooping (mist if they droop) and admire your work.
We can discuss now
