Actually, in the Ed Rosethal book he does talk about growing a 12 plant in soil in only a 3 gallon container, which I guess is where he came up with his formula for the space needed. But how is that info outdated though? I mean, if in the 1970's you could grow a big plant like that, why can't you do that now? I mean, it WORKED, didn't it?

My point is just that I no longer feel worrying about rootboundness is necessary for now.

Root mass and bud development

As days grow shorter, the plant 'knows' that winter is on its way so before beginning the flowering process, it tries to make sure its roots are hearty enough to carry the plant through a frost or two as the expected seeds (in our case buds) are developing. So, in a 1 gallon container, you may be able to put a 4 foot plant. However, that plant will become totally root bound as it begins to flower. As a result it will produce less buds than a plant of equal height in a container that is 4 gallons. This is because it has less roots to pull nutrients from and is under the physical stress of root boundness. Therefore, container size should not be restrictive, since buds, not total plant height, are what we are after.

Stoned ramblings,

The seventys were just discovering the wonders of growing MJ under floros. That was all the rage and was supposed to do for legalization and the home growing market THEN whet HID is supposed to do today(see Phototron). The problem with growing using advice written for floros is HID lights grow plants that yield 4-5 times as much. Thats right, HID gives you 400% to 500% more final dried, cured yield than floros. Imagine the extra complications brought out by this kind of growth.

As far as the twelve foot plant in the 3 gallon pot, Im sure he did grow it. If I devoted my life to growing MJ I would try wierd sh!t like that, too. Hell, I try wierd sh!t with my plants right now. All Im saying is the work involved in doing that would be ridiculous. You would have to trim the root every other day, and if that didnt shock the plants to death or hermie, it would eventually throw your back out.

Good to hear about the rootbound non-problem

Well, I'm not disagreeing with you, but just to let you know, one of the books I am referring to is brand new, and depicts only MH-lit gardens.

HOLY ****..did you say that your plants(santa)are around twenty inches and stand in eight inch round pots? my very first grow consisted of six pots of the same dimensions, but all became horrible victims of rootbound during the third week of flowering. i tried to transplant two of them but it was not successful at all. well, i guess it's live and burn..i mean live and learn..peace..
