All L.A. County medical pot dispensaries face prosecution, district attorney says

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said today that all the medical marijuana dispensaries in the county are operating illegally, and that "they are going to be prosecuted."

There are hundreds of dispensaries throughout the county, including as many as 800 in the city of Los Angeles, according to the city attorney's office. They operate under a 1996 voter initiative that allowed marijuana to be used for medicinal purposes, and a subsequent state law that provided for collective cultivation.

Based on a state Supreme Court decision last year, Cooley and City Attorney Carmen Trutanich have concluded that over-the-counter sales are illegal. Most if not all of the dispensaries in the state operate on that basis.

Cooley said his office had already begun preparing to prosecute a Culver City dispensary called Organica.

Widespread criminal prosecutions could deal a sharp blow to the medical marijuana movement in California, where advocates have argued that access to the drug has helped many cancer patients and others manage pain, nausea and other health issues.

Cooley and Trutanich announced their plans after a training session for narcotics officers at the Montebello Country Club. Outside about 100 medical marijuana advocates protested, saying that not allowing over-the-counter sales threatens the distribution of a product that many sick people have come to rely on.

Barry Kramer, operator of the California Patient Alliance, a dispensary on Melrose Avenue, said, "If this is the way it goes, we'll go underground again. There will be a lot more crime."

What does everyone think about this? Anyone in the Los Angeles area had the chance to stop by their local club only to be confronted by closed doors since this news broke?

I think it's stupid... by doing this they are just handing business to the cartels because people are going to have to go to the streets to get thier meds... lots of these patients are going to have to go back on synthetic perscription meds..Darvaset, methadone, the one Rush Limbah was addicted to,list is nasty and long. Make me wonder who is in who's pocket. He must be hanging out with ole Dumanis down in San Diego.
I think somehow it's money related and I'm sure they can find a better solution. Shit, if the city hired 800 people and sat one in each facility to make sure they got their fair share of the taxes they would make a huge profit.... but my guess is that it's the under the table profit from cartels or big drug companies that the DA's are looking for... just one man's guess, I could be way off.
On a side note, these business are good for the economy as small local growers can bring in thier extras, they employ people, they advertise, they rent space... what a shitty time to kick the city and state while it's down... People have to stand up for their rights and vote these bastards out of office... they don't answer to anybody, they have no boss. We are their bosses, we have to stand up for what we believ in.

Not off at all CT, and not forgetting the profits from the judicial system.
After all, prosecuting and throwing us in jail it is very, very profitable if you are on the 'right place of the law'.

Exactly fellas!

When reading that other thread about how mom and pop growers along with the medical cannabis industry making a huge dent in the mexican cartel's profits, I thought to myself, if the cartels were smart they would infiltrate state government and use their fortune to lobby against the laws to regain control. Then I hear about this and lights went off!

I understand this Carmen dude just got elected and could possibly be doing this for show, keeping some of whatever promises he made during his campaign. But if it continues, I would say it is in the best interest of the community to keep a watchful eye over this guy, to be sure he isn't doing any under handed or corrupt practices. That kind of stuff can ruin a politician.

I mean, seriously, why all the concern now? What happened that made them realize some collectives may be operating under illegal conditions? 8 out of 10 billion goes to the mexican cartel's marijuana trade, now with the medical cannabis industry booming and more mom and pop growers, it seems they have lost a strong grasp of their power reigns.

That Carmen dude looks like he can be bought.

Exactly Bro.. their buddies are the private industry behind the prisons I'm sure. They bust us and their buddies get paid.... with your tax dollars.. what a great system....NOT. We need more prisons to lock up all you pot smokers......(shhhhhh, so we can profit off you)
I have a few buddies that work in prisons. The things they tell me just make me sick.. and them too.. SCAM I'm not trying to implement that there are no place for prisons in our society.... well, now that I think about it, maybe I am. I was about to say child molesters and killers belong in prison but we could just shoot them HOW about some rehabilitation and education. Hey, while we have a work force in the prisons why is it that we don't put them to work? Please CT, settle down... my mind is going 100mph right now as I'm mad just thinking about all this.

DR.- One thing I can think of is that all this pot business is being thrown in their faces by the media. I'm sure it makes them feeel like the have little dicks to know that people are getting away with a pot business right under their noses. Yes, little dicks.. this could all be a little dick thing, just ask Bonnie Dumanis.

I cruised past a club the other day that is very small with only two parking spots out front. Most peeps park curbside and pay the meter before they go in. The owners park their respective vehicles in the spots that are available directly in front of the store instead of leaving them open for customer vehicles. What's even worse is that one of these vehicles is a 911 Porsche and the other is a Jag.

Im thinking to myself, whats wrong with this picture? If I owned a pot shop and was worried about getting robbed on the way in, which is probably why they use those spaces I would at the very least drive an old Nissan sentra or some less flashy car. What does this say to the customers that enter the store?

These guys should drive Porshes and Jags for the risks they take and I am not envious of their vehicles in this respect. They should drive less descript cars to their stores however so the customers dont think they are getting screwed over the overpriced meds the store is putting out.

Yet another in a growing wave of America going into a Police State! I love how because of mismanagement in the oversight committees that have been set up to prevent abuse in these circumstances immediately gets put on the shop owner...since it is so much easier to point your finger than to admit a mistake!! Why don't they just put a ban on everything and then have a supply line like Russia after the fall of their economy?! I mean, we are sooooo close to that shit it's not even funny! Bah...so anyone want to organize a REAL movement? I mean, not to step on any toes, but I have yet to see the motivation for ACTUAL action! I am down for whatever...mass protests in every major city hall, minimal consumer spending dropping tax revenues, zero oil consumption to hinder support of big government, refusal of any and all prescription medications, boycotts at all medical care centers (INCLUDING VA HOSPITALS!!), massive petition drives, the list goes on and on. Or are we just going to keep on taking this shit like sheep??

I recently attended a protest at the arrainment of a collective owner. I was dissapointed with the turn out. I think there were about 30 people protesting, only 1 of which was a collective owner. In my opinion every collective owner from the border of Mexico to Ventura should have been there, with all thier employees in tow.. Over 1000 people would have made a much bigger impact than the measly 30 people we had. After all, it's thier rights I was protesting for.. they won't even close thier store for a few hours to come stand up for thier rights.......sad.
Check the Americans for Safe Access website. They are in a transitional stage so it might not be all up to date but it'll get better. Also if you can find the freedaviddavanavich.. I think that's how it's spelled.. Here's a link to the ASA news letter. If you are in a postion that you can not give your time and effort.. If I were you, any of you who enjoy having the legal right to grow your own, or any of you who would like your state to someday pass Medical Cannabis laws that will allow you to legally grow your own medicine then I would at least donate a few hundred bucks to them every time you harvest

Swordfish, you are absolutly right.. they deserve to drive cars this nice and they shouldn't because there are a lot of people out there that think any one who has anything nicer than they have doesn't deserve it and they'll wish ill on them.. Humans suck
