| and i'd buy that book, too. i can tell you this: all light bulbs with glass envelopes put out virtually no uv. Tthat's because glass is a uv filter - everything below about 300 nm is filtered out by the glass. however, there are uv lights - like the gremicidal lamps - that have quartz or ceramic envelopes. you can get plenty of uv from them. but they're pretty expensive. so i'm not sure...even if we knew how much uv we needed...if we could even do anything about it except, of course, grow outdoors! there is a simple experiment that would tell us if it even is the uv that makes outdoor grows better - grow a crop in a greenhouse, and next to it grow an outdoor crop. then you'd have a pretty good control, the glass would filter out the uv on the greenhouse side...anybody have a spare greenhouse? | ||

But if you remove the outer glass from an MV...muchos UV, gringo. Sunblock, polaroid glasses, long sleeves ect...not for the novice!zoominoid

Not trying to take this even further off topic but I think UV has more to do with the production of psychoactives within cannabis than anything else; acting as a counter/shield to negative UV effects. I don't think UV is generaly very good for plants which is why its not already included in general horticultural lighting. Thats what makes cannabis growing special in this regard- the more UV (b) and theoreticaly the higher production of the goal of the grow: the psychoactives. I would ouble warn anyone attemptin to take the outer envelope off of their (mv) lights...and not just from the point of the light its self but also from the leaking of gases within the bulb that are otherwise double-sealed in. Saftey first, especially that of your family and pets ![]()

![]() | Been a long tme since this thread was active, but I'm gonna give it a shot and revive the ghost. On the subject of UVB. You can buy fluor bulbs which are designed for large reptile pets which emit 7% UVB. They are a bit expensive, but not too bad really.

How much does one envirolite cost? and can find them in any home depot? I am prepared to grow just one plant for now and I hope just one envirolite is good enough. Peace out Homies!

95 watt Envirolites are $99.95 & you have to order them online or get them at a hydro store. Home Depot doesn't carry them.

![]() | *bump* This is probably the best thread in the lighting category. I will be using EVL's for the 'mostly vegetative' chamber in my upcoming 37/37 perpetual garden system. (Yeah, there will be a grow journal for it) Assuming my new plants spend 27 days in veg and 10 days in flowering before being moved to the 400w HPS flowering chamber for the second half of the process, would you recommend 2 x Full spectrum EVL's or 1 x Full, 1 x Red spectrum? I have chosen EVL's for the growth chamber as the grow area is far smaller than the large flowering closet, and has less ventilation. The reason they will spend 10 days flowering in the veg chamber is due to the lengthy flowering time compared to veg time. (make sense?) Could the pro's like Mist or 86 give me some advice here?

![]() | Also, has anyone else noticed that since this thread, along with Mist & Agent86's EVL journals, there has been a hell of a lot more EVL activity across the HC community? These guys are pioneers. ![]()

![]() | I really hate to see people get ripped off by these people. I first saw 95 watt Envirolites on ebay making crazy claims better than HPS blah blah blah.... Light spectrum is what they use to trick you. I admit they might be great for seedlings or clones, they have very little use for flowering. The thought of replacing HID's with fluorescents is like ripping the motor out a Porsche and installing a Ford Escort motor so it runs cooler. (duh!) BTW You can get them at Home Depot here for 30 bucks and they are great seedling lights for that price. These people selling them for 100 bucks are making a killing off of you. The reason they look so bright to you is because they have a mirrored reflector such as a car headlight. Mirrored reflectors are terrible for plant growth, but good for car headlights! 95 watt Envirolites ![]()

You make some interesting claims in your post. ![]() Quote:

![]() I'm not trying to be jerk, just trying to keep this thread on FACT based statements, not some half baked notions. I've made a scientific based case for EVLs being better than HIDs, if you consider the light-to-plant distance (all other things being equal). As I'm sure you know, light intensity decays according to an inverse square formula. Which means if an HID is 12" from the plant and the EVL is 6", the HID must be 4X brighter for the same amount of light to be present at the plant (correct me if I'm wrong Jose). Unless you have some fact based theory (experience or scientific), let's refrain from making incorrect blanket statements. I hope you understand. I wish you the best growing. Choader
