A common response and mistake I've made before confusing the envirolights with the $30 lights of america PC work light and similar fixtures.

Also I disagree... EVL in a cab might be good with 1-2 lights and less heat but whats the point for most when you consider that a 96 watt EVL runs 90-100 each and I would have to spend over $1000 to get the same amount of wattage (and less lumens) as my 1000 watt HPS system w/Hortilux. Even with a premium switchable HPS system & cooling thats about 1/2 the price. And with the hood I have and 185cfm fan my fixture runs cooler than my fan cooled 384 power compact system on my aquarium (basically envirolights, 4x96 watt panasonic bulbs). Not to mention single bulb replacement cost vs multiple and the much shorter life span of PC's with a rapid lumen drop with age. I don't doubt you can grow w/ EVL's but with the cost factor... Why spend more money for less??

Too much confusing apples and oranges here. Certain lights maybe best for specific applications. i.e. EVL good for small grow/cabinet and bad for even small grow room. In an aquarium EVL/PC is good for growing less demanding organisms like soft corals but not good for hard corals at the same wattage as a metal halide. But as with many other subjects the argument/debate will I'm sure continue...

I tend to agree

Each type of lighting has its own issues which must be dealt with. You have to pick your poison. However, saying that EVLs suck and can't grow anything is just plain wrong AND uninformed.

If I had the space and heat control, I'd put in a few 1Ks. I don't so I'm going with 4 EVLs in a 2X3X4(h) box where ventilation and noise are a problem. That's over 40K+ lumens right down on the plant. Now that's some light energy where it counts.

Hey Choader,

Thanks for trying to keep some balance in here. I have to admit that 86 and Mist's successes have won me over!

I have a situation where:

1) The landlord pays for the electricity on my rental.
2) I am upstairs in an old house with little insulation and neighbors below I'd rather not bother.
3) As it is a rental, I cannot do proper ventillation (i.e. cutting holes in walls) and have to rely on the room-air for cooling.

With these limitations, EVL seems the way to go. If I move, cut a window in the room, or am not happy with the results of the first few grows, I'll admit my faults and switch over. But until then, the initial setup cost varies slightly and I've seen enough proof to give it a shot.

choader - your cabinet looks similar size-wise to the one I'm going to build. I'm aiming for 4ft wide x 3ft deep x 5ft high. I'll split 1ft off the width for storage/ moms/ cloning so I'll be dealing with a 9 sq foot space growroom.

As soon as I finish the plans, I will post them in a construction thread.

Everyone cross your fingers - I'm a newbie going out on a limb

peace, cali-canuck

I got some good plants goin from just 2 EVL's w some side fluos.
here is an example
http://www.hempcultivation.com/420/a...&postid=300273

Now if I was growing more than 4 or 5 at a time I would CONSIDER switching to HID, but for the time being, the EVL's are right for me.
