I'm trying out

a dusk til dawn fluorex light at 6825 lumens and a 4 ft 2 light fixture 40 watters at 2250 lumens/bulb. The package says the fluorex I have is 65 watts and has a color rendering index of 84/100....the sun being 100. It also mentions it's rich in the blue spectrum. I have the sun bulbs, purchased at wal-mart, standing vertically next to my 3 plants. My grow space is like 2 by 3 1/2 by 3 3/4 tall. Well with the dusk til dawn fluorex, about $26 at lowes...went to 3 wal-marts and couldn't find the shop light...pissed me off, with that mounted I get that height being 2 inches under the light. It may be closer to 3 1/2 ft tall or something.

morsey is beginning to sprout.

ok well a very interesting thread and one im sure most of us growers would like to know more about.
this argument is going to go on for ages lumen this and spectrum that.
some one please get one of each, 2 identical clones and post the results im sure it will settle the debate.

there is nothing like a good argument to learn new things

It seems to me if you could reproduce

the suns spectrum. I know I'm a newbie but I'd bet that's the best. However you obviously need to also try and reach towards reproducing the amount of lumens a plant might receive in outside light. I mean if you could harness the sun's light and use it indoors somehow, maybe still even having to pay around the same amount as electrical lighting to do this, wouldn't you? I would.

If they could adapt the spectrum of the envirolight into an HID, we would be set. I have seen many full spectrum MH/HPS, but none with the spectrum of the Envirolight.
Do we have any electrical wizards here? Maybe y'all could do some research on the topic.

Odin is beginning to sprout.

I just switched to compact 42 watt "twisty" floros, at 2700 lumins each. and i pay $8 each for them. the package says they last 13000 hours. personally i think they have the most bang for the buck. i have a limited grow space, currently 2 square feet, 10 cubic feet. grow is going great, as good as the hps i was using. also, when i was using hps, i had one bulb. now that i am using floro, i have six to get the same lumins, with about 100 more watts. the advanage is he expense should one burn out. also if one burns out, i still have 83% of my light.

hmm,
bluestar. u reckon it would be easier to adapty the mh/hps to be a full spectrum light or create a Enviro with a higher wattage and therefore higher lumens??
mabey the future lie with a higher lumen Enviro, then we would be set....
just a though

i am a 400watt hps user all the way, but open to change.

I'm thinking more advances in fluoro

would be cool cuz the fluorex dusk til dawn light I've got is 65 watts compared to a 70watt Hps. Fluorex puts out 6825 lumens. A 70w hps puts only 6300. Color rendering is 84 for fluorex and hps is like 21 I believe. Hps has a color temp of around 2100-2200kelvin or so, I apologize for not having an exact number but that's close. The fluorex is 6400 kelvin. The high color temp means it has a whole lot of blue light to.
