Ok the are some Skeptics out there so I Decided to take some pics of my setup.

The bulb is a MUti Vapor (Metal Halide) model MVR175/U
The ballast is a standard Regent 175 watt Mercury Vapor with no capacitor of ignitor insight the grey cap is a Photocell.
The Ballast is enclosed in a PC power supply :>

I tried to personal message you - but this will work too and build up our posts I suppose if thats important to anyone.
I'm only passing on what the folks at my light store told me regarding the ignitor and capabilities of an MV. I have not tried this myself.
The multiVapor Light you mention is a combo MV and MH lamp. I saw some at Lowes and they do not put out near the Lumens that the regular MH or HPS were stating on their specs.
I am always trying to learn more about these things so I will appreciate any input you have, but being the skeptic I am I will always check the validity of claims with those I Know - Know the facts.
Thanks for pursuing this topic.

Best of Luck With ALL Your Grows!

I'm with you hydro,,MV bulb's work with MH ballasts..

When i started i had an industrial light fixture that had an 400 MV bulb in it,,when i took it apart the ballast was a 400 MH..and yes MV is the same thing as an MH as long as the wattage is the same(bulb, ballast)they will work with each other..

BTW i vegged with the MV for 3 weeks b4 i got an MH and i think the MV did nicely..

Yes, MV and MultiVapor (MH) have different spectrums. MV is not as good for growing as the mh bulbs.

the lighting section of the grow guide appears a little outdated or misleading then with this info, at least in part. it insists mercury vapor is not good for growing, but fails to mention these lights support multi vapor (mh) bulbs.

Proof?
You don't need proof when it is an acutal Fact.

I got me a 175 Unit that housed a MV light
I went out and got the 175 MH from Home Depot after
doing some research on my own, since at the time I
asked the boards, no one had a clue.......

Make sure the bulb matches the ballast....

Worked just fine
......still working fine
