![]() | yeah choader, the sound can be "baffled" some. heres some ways i know of that will do it. all of these will require you to build an enclosure over the intake or the exhaust or both depending on noise level but here goes 1-line the enclosure with foam tape. this will absorb some sound 2- put 2 hard turn 90 elbows in line with it 3- make the hole larger (less resistance means less noise) on the open end of your enclosure all of these as an indivudual will kill fan noise some. 1&2 combined would be the most effective in my mind

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | thanks just - I will probably do all 3. Will be looking at this later in the spring/summer. No time to change it out now. However, I saw a 'bare bones' 1K HPS wired, for $145us. That's pretty good. If the tube works well, I may go for it next time around. Choader

Hey guys - I just finished construction on an 'DIY' air cooled 430HPS. Used some 4" duct pipe, an aluma-brite reflector hood (the kind on the Ebay lights), and a pyrex bake-a-round. Works awesome with a 152CFM dayton blower (thanks for those silencer tips justawannabe). I have the light in a 2'x3'x8' closet and I can keep the door sealed tight all the time. Even though the interior stays cool can I can keep my hand 2" from the bulb, I still have to keep the light 12" from my plant, or she shows signs of light stress. (leaf curl, bleaching - ) My main cola even 'bolted' from the light being too close. Too much radiant heat, even though the air was only 80F at the top of the plant. I wonder if some type of plastic or glass heat shield would help with that? Awake204

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Awake - Maybe trying inching the light down to give the plants a chance to adjust? If you still have to keep the light 12" away, doesn't that defeat part of the purpose? Can you touch the tube? Do you have any pics? I'd like to do a 1K like this, in the same size closet. Hmmmmmmmmmm Choader

Choader - I think it has something to do with the 'radiant heat' given off by the bulb. Not so much the temperature of the air, but the actual infrared heat energy transferred from the bulb to the plant. I guess, even with water-cooled lights, the surface of the enclosure is cool to the touch, but you still have to keep the big bulbs some distance from the plant. Ive never tried getting the plant used to the extra light slowly, though. That sounds like a good idea. The grow that Im working on at the moment is my first with a 430W, which I installed two weeks into flowering. I had a 250WHPS in there prior to that. I kept the 430W the same distance away (about 8" or so), and even though I had the air cooled tube, the plant got light burn. Not heat stress. I backed the light off to 12" and the symptoms went away. The buds are MUCH bigger than with the 250W for the same strain(SS Bubblegum), however. And a lot more dense, even lower flowers over 24" away from the bulb. Tons more resin too. (although that could be the 0-50-30 bloom booster, which I didnt use last time.) With a big enough fan, you could definately use that 1000W, but you'd be getting over 15,000 lumens/ft^2. You'd need CO2 Enrichement to use that effectively. Is that your plan? (thats a good plan ) I think you would still need to keep the 1000W over 12" from the top, though. There is a thread explaining how radiant heat affects MJ on overgrow.com. Sorry I didnt post a link, I searched over there and I couldnt find it again! Maybe this strain just dosent like too much light. I was thinking a silicate additive might help to get the light closer too. Ill have to try it out next time. Awake204

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I love to see pics of the SS Bubblegum as I'm growing some of that now. It definitely seems to be less tolerant of 'stuff' than the Sweet Tooth3/4. I overnuted and the SS BG took the hardest hit. Also didn't grow as fast as the ST3/4 (SOL). Sorry to drift. I'll have to do more research. My space is height challenged (4') so I can't have the bulb too far away. I'll keep my eye on this thread & Agent86's. He's planning to make an air cooled with a 430W (or is it 600?). Anyway, thanks for the explaination. I appreciate your time & input. And if you have pics of that SSBG, I'd love to see 'em. Choader

Hey Choader - have you tried the bubblegum yet? Its is definately the best weed I have smoked so far. Really great, clear high that lasts a for a good while, with a noticeablely euphoric body buzz. And it was nice and clear too, with little couchlock, and that was on my last plant which I harvested too late (90%+ pistils were brown) Im definately going to post some pix of this one...I just have to get a camera within the next 3 weeks This grow has been really wacked...I have 6 big plants in my closet that got way too tall. I couldnt bear to kill any so I flowered them all. Its like a giant 3' sphere of colas. I had to trim a lot of secondary growth off, they were so dense. I was actually going to cut them all down without flowering - I had clones from the best one and I didnt have any more room. The clones never rooted, and I didnt want to wait any longer. So, I flowered them all![]() Have you started flowering yet? I think these plants have a very low odor. They smell great, but I have to put my nose right up to the buds to really smell them. I just found out about all this radiant heat business a little while ago myself...my plants largest fan leaves (closest to the light) were starting to get speckled with brown spots. I thought it could be an mg problem, but after some extensive searcing, found out it was actually the infraread heat energy issue. Too much light intensity causes the leaf to process water too fast, and the nutrients in the leaf salt out of the solution they're in, and burn the plant. Now it makes sense why you're supposed to back off on the nutes under a bigger light. Think about it - if you had a super bright tanning light and removed all the heat from it via ventilation - you'd still get a wicked tan. Ill get those pics up ASAP! Awake204

![]() | Well I just had fun reading this thread. I like the idea of the cooltube and will have to try and work something out for my as yet unused 400W HPS. On the subject of sourcing pyrex tubes I found a manufacturer that can do just about any size/diameter of tube. Unfortunately for me they are in the USA. There are no prices listed but they do say to contact them if you want a custom piece. They have a massive list of in stock pyrex tubes that goes for ever. Note to Mods: I hope that posting this url is not a breach of the posting guidelines. I'll just write the url down and not make it a direct link. If this is a problem can a mod please advise me and I will rectify it immediately. Apologies in advance if necessary. (((wilmad.com/PBpyrextubes.html)))

I am so amazed. So many people are into building these things. The price of Bake A Rounds has sky rocketed because of this thread. I used the hurricane glass method, which worked wel, but I just purchased the pyrex tube recently for my next grow. Really its only a cosmetic difference. I think that the new one will work just the same as my old one. I'll Keep the original intact in case I want to cool a large MH because it has a bulge in the middle to accomodate larger bulbs.
