THanks Xzoomd. They did have sensors on them. I covered them with electrical tape and now everything works fine. Its kinda funny how it was those sensors. I was always wondering what those little nipple things were on the back. I would look at them and they looked black and i thought they were some type of plug or something. When i was in my grow room messing with them a while ago i was like "hmm, i wonder if they do have sensors..." so i looked around and saw those nipple things again and notice that they were not black but that they were a dark seethrough green. I held it up to the light and sure enough. A SENSOR!! Thanks again.

First of all im not negative all the time... just the last couple of days have been sh1tty so im in a bad mood ![]() I agree the monolith has some good ideas, and, yes, i do like the venting... my disapprovement is more the types of materials then the design. For example, mirrors are a big no no.. throw those out.. use mylar or flat white paint. Using that expanding insulation that comes in the cans for the whole thing was also not the brightest thing in my opinion, since he could have bought foam board insuluation for a lot cheaper and wouldn't have been such a mess-hazzard. I also think he should have taken some precations with heat... with heat sensors that will kill the power if it gets too hot... this could happen due to the one or more of the fans failing.. which does happen over time. And of course, being the tech-oriented person i am, i would have added compuer control over the functions of the box since its supposedly self contained. My $0.02 on the monolith... And i guess i sorta like u in a friend-like sense (PLEASE NOTE THIS DOES NOT MEAN IM GAY@! [also note: by saying that with such emphasis does not mean im homophobic]) ![]()

I had it in a cooler with little venting and it got hot, I can just imagine how hot all 4 will get? maybe in need of a evap or dry ice? you guys think one fan will do or should I use 2? and does anyone know if this is too much light for my clones to root? ![]() | I have the FloureX shoplight and it does get pretty damn hot. I took the front plastic cover off and drilled 10 holes in the back...last night when i checked up on my plants the plastic to hold the bulb in place or something was burning a little...I could smell it and the plastic around the bulb was turning black. So i recomend taking the bulb out and unscrewing the screw behind the bulb and take the little plastic thing off. Just thought I'd let your FloureX 65W owners know. PeacE

![]() | SmokEE, already did that myself... I don't know why they put those in there since the bulb can support itself easily.

![]() | Yes! I checked my plants this morning and it was so hot in there they wilted.. I am going to use a few fans for sure on this. also I noticed that they are hot to the touch, which I didn't know either, I thought all fluoros were cool, but not these. I have to keep them away from my plants now.. so less grow room for me.. you guys think it would be better to use just three of those lights? this is a pretty good thread, lots of info and it's not boring to read!! i love this place Hempgirl

![]() | HG, if its as hot your your describing, you might want to get some high volume vans and not just ordinary computer fans.. Something like this fan would be great, it uses AC and 115v which means it can be plugged right into the wall if you live in america (other countries use different wall voltages) and pushes 102CFM, so the air inside you cabinet would be completely replaced every 3 (!!) seconds.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | yeah i have one of those fans.. they keep shiit cool. HG- if you dont care about the amount of noise, i would say put one of these at the bottom pushin air in, and one of these at the top pushin air out.. lots of air movin around now, and no heat at all is left in there. dont take out a light.. i would say dont mount your lights on the top facing down, put them on the sides facing in so they only take up about 3-4 inches of verticle space instead of 6-8". also what you could do is mount a square piece of glass or plexiglass just below the lights, seperating your box into 2 spaces.. one for plants one for lights, and place one fan blowing air in on the left side of the lights, and one fan blowing out on the right side of the lights. Now you have even less heat to worry about, and you can have as many lights as you want, and the platns never touch the lights. This is my favourite setup idea.. i wish i could do this for myself. peace

They do make a 215W 8' flourescent (13,500 Lumens) that has been available for years. It belongs to a family of lamps called Super High Output (SHO) or Very High Output (VHO) lamps Not very efficient, about 54 Lumens/Watt with ballast losses. These lamps, and their cousins the HO Floro's, are used mostly in exterior applications and in walk in coolers and retail freezer cases because of their ability to start in very cold temperatures. Ballasts for these lamps are actually more expensive than HID ballasts. Now About the Florex It's too bad that people are having heat problems with the FluoreX lamps. In my conversation with one of their engineers I was told that they were designed for exterior use only. I suspect this is because they have been designed for use in low ambient temperatures with free air circulation (Cool night air). They may not have been able to gain approval for use as an interior lighting device either. My experience with LOA is that they tend to push design limits a bit so there may not be as big a safety factor built in to these lights as one might suspect. The big weakness seems to be heat dissapation thru the thermoplastic case. Thermoplastic is a poor conductor of heat and many types of TP melt as low as 155 degrees Farenheit. I think adding vent holes, removing the face, and giving them forced ventilation may do the trick. It wouldn't be the first time people have had to re engineer a LOA product. Be aware, all these mods, even the use of the FluoreX indoors, constitutes unintended use (misuse?) of their product. Be carefull! Peace! Harrad.
