Just sprouted- Lighting advice?
permalink

After unsucessfully germinating these four pathetic bagseeds, my friend gives me three Kush seeds. I popped 'em in the soil, and to my surprise they sprouted two days after! One of them is already poking out of the soil, but the other two are still buried.
They're sitting on my kitchen windowsill and only get the morning sunlight. The rest of the day it's just daylight, which I know isn't enough for good growth. I plan on growing them indoors until it is warm enough to stick 'em in my tree outside, but that might not be for at least a month! ( I live on the westcost of BC )
Anyway, I've looked around the house and I have a few floro's kicking around. Seeing as I don't speak lightbulb, I figured I'd let you guys tell me which one I have is best.

Noma
Helical 13W
120Vac 60Hz
180OmA

Luminus
23W
120V 60Hz
363mA

Globe
13W
120V 60Hz
210mA

Earth Light
14W 120V
60Hz
190mA

Then I have this Flood light, which I doubt is any good
Philips
150W
120V

I feel like such a n00b, but I don't know ANY of the terminology. w's? v's? mA's and Hz's?

I dont have any light-fixtures that I could hang above them, so the bulb will be sitting next to my plants in a small lamp. Once they're too big to be sitting in my windowsill I'll move them to my closet, which is 4ft long, 5ft tall, and 1.5ftwide.

Are these any good?

Ummm... the wattage is the power consumed, the V, Hz, mA are all pretty useless info, light wise. In CFLs, what's "important" is the output spectrum ("color") of the bulb. "Warm White" (~2700K) & "Daylight" (~5500K-6500K) are good, "Cool White" (~4000K-~5000K) is not good. Sometimes you find "Stark White" (~5100K). This is a marginal spectrum, but still usable. Something advertised as "full spectrum" is usually "daylight".

In the list above, assuming that Phillips 150W is flouro and not a halogen, and also assuming the spectrum is right, is prolly the best of the bunch.

I can't stress enough the importance of keeping CFLs close to the plant. 2" at most, 1/2" is preferable. CFL light (any light for that matter) loses PAR by half every inch it travels...

I'd recommend the following:

1. Put your seedlings in a humidity dome.

2. If you have a heating pad, put it under the dome. Keep it low.

3. Get some Floros and keep 'em close. Don't burn 'em though - test with back of hand.

4. Get a fan and blow it on the little ones, after they come out of the humi dome (1 week or so)

Good Luck!

humidity dome? I'm not sure what you mean by that. I'm assuming I could use plastic cups, making a sort of 'greenhouse', but I dont have any. Would glass jars do?
The temperature in my house is usually really warm because we have an old cast iron wood stove plonked in the middle of the living room, so getting too cold shouldn't be a problem for these little ones.

i use 27w 6500k cpf. be sure that they say 6500k the 2700k also work. i had poor results with 5000k

that light bulb will not work well

dome- a transparent cover that fits over the plant keeping moisture in.
if you use one be sure to give fresh air a few times a day

I can't understand the use of a humidity dome for seedlings that have sprouted. If the plant is started from a seeding it has roots, therefore it can absorb water at the correct rate. Humidity domes I thought were for keeping moisture available for young clone plants that do not yet have roots and absorb through the foliage.

I am only speaking in terms of humidity domes and seedling and clones not the facts of humidity as a need for all growth.

My point is why a dome on sprouted seedlings? Isn't that information for information's sake.

I've decided to move the plants out of the window and just grow them under floros. I have this pathetically drawn setup.

They're sitting underneath my dresser. I took out the middle drawer to make more room for the lamp that is sitting sideways across a peice of wood in the middle. I've covered the area in white paper and with the two lights it seems pretty darned bright. Plus the lightbulbs dont get too hot or anything. I've got a small fan in there to help stimulate good stem growth, is there anything else I should put in? I have it covered with two wool blankets to keep the light out of the rest of my bedroom...

Good planning so far. You're doing your research.

So far, just keep those plants as close as possible (without burning - use hand test) to the light

And keep doing your homework!

I check in on the plants several times a day, opening and closing the area should let in enough fresh air, right?
I found a thermometer and the temperatures inside are only reaching about 63F. I have no heating pad I can put in there, but I was thinking mabye replacing one of the floros with an incandecent lightbulb to heat it up. Does temperature matter as long as it doesn't get too cool? Or would I be better off with the two floro bulbs and the cooler temperature...
Oh yeah, I have them on 24/h light. Is this right for veggin state?
