Where to get HPS lights and ballasts?
permalink

So I built a couple hempy buckets today, and started to build my grow room with mylar and PVC (3'x4'x6' ft). The seeds are are on there way, the only thing left I need is proper lighting. I want HPS lights. Im liking the 400 watts. Im just wandering, where might one procur these lights? Walmart? Home Depot? I really dont want to order anything online, because a life time of experiences has made me quite paranoid. Anyway, if anyone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.

if you don't want to buy one online, go to a hydro shop.

If you are without a Hydro store....
and don't want to order on-line

big lights are also used in industrial applications
warehouses and street lights
so a big supply house like Grainger would love to charge you out the ass for one of these
look in your yellow pages for industrial supply

But,if you buy from some commercial light supply make sure you get your bulb from a grow store.. there is a difference between 400w HPS street lights and 400w HPS grow bulbs.. I would go with Hortilux as of now they seem to be the best reviewed.. If you wanna, you can spend the extra bread for a "super blue" to get more of that blue spectrumn in there. Myself I haven't used them but definately will try next time I need new bulbs... good luck

I wouldn't be worried about ordering online from the right place, like a lighting supplier. (not a grow shop) I just bought a 400w MH fixture for my shop, not for growing at all, and I would never think twice about ordering such a thing for a harmless use. 1000bulbs.com has some good prices. You wouldn't be paranoid about buying christmas lights from them would you? Ordering an HPS light fixture is no more suspicious to anybody...and if you buy locally I can guarantee you are getting ripped off.

Disagree. Actual price to your door will typically be very similar once you add on shipping costs. (and I like putting my hands on an item before I pay for it) And there's no contest with service after the sale if you have any questions or need warranty work. Plus, shopping locally keeps your money local, which helps everyone where you live.

But I do agree that it's no big deal to buy a ballast or light. No worries about that.

I've seen several listed on CL and most have been very reasonably priced.

The ballast is the only thing you really need to get from somewhere. I the fixture you can build yourself from an electrical store and a hardware store. A piece of aluminum with an electrical box mounted to it with a ceramic mogul and some good flexible wire to wire into the balast.
