CoolTube+big fan eats plastic tubing
permalink

I installed a CoolTube in my DarkRoom 150 and put a 400CFM fan on it. (That fan is the loudest damn fan - I can't recommend it.)

3rd pic -- this is the damaged end with a light bulb inside shining through all the holes. Apparently the air-blown, heated microscopic particles shooting through there, combined with the folding/unfolding of the plastic and it started to eat right through. Micro-leaks like this upstream of the bulb are not a problem - a little room temp air - but downstream and it's hot enough to scorch your tops, which you want to keep just several inches away from your 'Tube. I had heat burn last grow and this is why.

Here's my solution. This sucker won't be wearing through any time soon. It leaks a bit around the joints so a little d.t. - but this is way better then taping that plastic tubing.

The inner diam of the new piece was such that the CoolTube flopped around a bit more then I wanted when I hooked them up. I popped a rivet on the end of piece and then a 6" clamp squeezed it almost air tight, then d.t.

If you own a CoolTube, don't forget to clean the glass once in a while. Another reason not to have to duct tape the crap out of the connection; peeling it off is no fun.

Peace.

GREAT FIX! can't go wrong with steel. There is a product called alumi-flex. High temp applications and insulated with R6. 16 bucks per 8 foot length.

2 things helped my noise level a lot..
1. placing the fan before the light to push the air instead of pulling it. It worked pretty good.. everyone told me I can get much better cooling if I move my fan and pull instead of push... so I did.
2. A $30 speed controller for my fan. Turn the speed down a bit and it's much less noisy.

By the way.. I saw no difference in temps when I pushed the air through vs pulling it through.

Push that air through - don't pull

If I were to pull the air through my CoolTube with those holes in the tubing like in the 3rd pic, I'd be drawing in small amounts of non-filtered grow hut air and exhausting it into the room. Not good. Pushing the air, in my opinion, is usually a much better choice for this reason.

I pulled air through when I had a cheap inline fan. I attached it to the downwind side of the CoolTube and pulled air across the bulb. I think that was about the time my brother-in-law smelled fresh ganga stink seeping out from under the basement door.

BTW, that was HydroFarm brand tubing that got ate up - not the cheap stuff.
