How to tell if an HPS/MH bulb is burned out?
permalink

Funny story, I'm moving into a new industrial place for working and growing. There are some boxes left over from the last occupant, currently in jail on drug charges, which I thought was a bunch of garbage. Last night I got out the ladder to get high enough to reach the boxes...guess what I found?

CASES and CASES of MH and HPS bulbs ranging from 100 to 1000 watts, some industrial flood fixtures, and two cases each of T8 and T5 fluorescent tubes! I nearly fell off the ladder I was laughing so hard. Guess what the last guy was doing in here?

Anyway, some of the MH/HPS bulbs are brand new, some look used, some look broken. How exactly can I tell if one of these bulbs is burned out completely? Obviously there's no filament in there to begin with...(and I don't have an ballasts hooked up yet to try them)

You might consider a different place to grow if the last guy there was busted. Best way to tell which are good and which aren't is to hook them to a ballast.

He was busted for meth, nothing to do with growing. Possibly stealing too, I'm not completely sure. But my grow is perfectly legal, I've got a card. It really is a great hiding place for a grow, but I'm not going to describe it much more on here for that reason.

Problem is a bunch of them are 1,000w. I don't have and won't buy a ballast that big unless the bulbs I have are still good...

Ah I see. You know there may be a way to tell by looking at them, but I cannot tell the difference. You might be able to bring them in to a grow shop they usually have a ballast or two in the back for testing on.

if the ends of the arc tube are grey'd or blackish they've been used and are probably garbage for most growers. Even if they do still work, the light output has probably depreciated to the point where they're not worth using. I tend to save all my old bulbs, even though they're "spent" they do still work as backups.

I didnt find it a very funny story though... :-0

hps bulbs get that black grey tinge yeah at the bottom.

but im currently running such bulbs and they look ok, next to the 400w mh the 150w hps, look about half that (36000 lm)

one burned out the other day, i dont remember anything different to it, but i wasnt looking.

mh bulbs are a bit more distinct from what ive seen, the plasticy bit in them, looked burnt, but only bit with lots of little bubbles in the plastic, with a green tint.

i dont have much experience though.

some say its mostly price...

others love them.

some have added blue spectrum or more lumens or par for the watt. (hps)

mh has more varieties, extra blue bulbs, bulbs with extra red and more.

be careful growing where someone else was busted. not because of the cops, but because someone else, might be keeping tabs on the place. they might be real interested in you if they find out you are growing, legal or not. especially if they are meth heads, tweakers. those guys have no respect for anything.
