no, the surface area of the canopy in squared feet is what matters, not volume in cubic feet or the height of the plants... fluorescent lights should be kept within 1-3 inches of the plant tops cuz lumen intensity dramatically decreases about 6 inches from the bulb

My box is......

2x1.325x1.375 feet

If I want 7k lumens per square foot I need...... 2*1.325=2.65, 2.65x7000=18550, so I need 18500 lumens......?
yes, and more is better

3 100 watts bulb would produce about..... 20k lumens? would that work? or?

edit: I can't find any actuall 100 watt cfls on google shopping lol, I found 1.... that's 50 bucks for a single light.
i dunno i don't use 100W bulbs or shop online

would 5.5k lumens per sq foot suffice for a small dwarf plant such as LowRyder2?

Like, my container is fairly small, to small to have a ballast with an HPS, and 7k lumens per sq foot is a lot of lights for this small container.

Aim for like 4000-5000 Lumens per square foot. 7,000+ lumens is like best case scenario with proper ventilation...

2.65sq/ft with 4000 lumens per square feet is 10600 lumens
I.E. (1) 26w cfl = 1600 lumens
(8) 26w cfls(208w total) =12800 lumens which is 4800 lumens per sq/ft

I use a 70w HPS and a 65w CFL for a total of approx 11,000 lumens in 2 sq/ft works very well with autoflower dwarf MJ check the link in my sig for more details....

that's the ideal cannabis plants thoroughly enjoy direct and blinding hot summer sunshine

but i think my plants yield decently with less than the minimum recommended 2000 lumens per square foot until i can offer more anyways

Ok, that's good. I was planning on doing something like.... plugging 2 4 way light sockets into my 2 lamps. Allowing for 8 lights in 2 lamps.

Only problem is I don't know what they called.

I called lowes and asked the guy if they had them, and after explaining it's like a Y socket but with 4 instead of 2, he got me and said they did have them. By the time I hung up I realized I forgot what they are called.

What are they called? a Y socket adapter but with 4 spots for lights instead of 2.

8 lights, 24 watts each = 192 watts, which at about 65 lumens per wat is 12480. For my container that's just at about 4-5k lumens per sqr foot. So if I can only figure out what those 4 way adapters are called I will have my lights covered.

Ya but I need to know what those adapters are called that you screw into 1 socket, and it lets you screw in 4 more lights.

Looks something like this ...

those 8 lights will produce a comparable amount of heat to the setup i've described with a 70w hps and a 65wcfl....

i dunno if theres a lowes near you but they have 70w HPS for $34.99

HPS will penetrate a lot deeper than cfls.
In my box the plants under the HPS side do get heavier more dense buds.
I am considering switching to a 100w MH or another 70w HPS in that box instead of 65w CFL...

Does HPS not require a ballast? How am I going to hang that in a container with a lid, meaning lid from the top of the container.

the ballast on 50w and 70w are little computer boards that are like size of a 3x5 card with capacitors on em and such....maybe an inch and a half tall.
the ballast are easy to remove from the housing as well as the bulb and socket...
I am an electricity novice and have done this with no help.
