Whatcha lookin for exactly?

Here is one I built for someone awhile ago.

They wanted to run two 12/12 rooms off one ballast, for moon desert space vegetables, cheaply. So I got a 1kW ballast, a relay, and a box to put it all, and wired it up.

There are two cords, one plugs into any 120v outlet for power to the ballast, the other plugs into a timer set to 12/12 to operate the relay. There are two SS Lamp outlets on the other end, to plug each reflector too.

The ballast is rubber mounted to the box using rubber washers, and the box has rubber feet, so the whole setup virtually silent. I had a spare computer fan and 12v cell phone charger, so I left a few vents open on one end, and mounted the fan to the cover on the other, so its actively air cooled for longevity.

Ballast was around $75, box was $10 and relay was $30, extension cords and the lamp outlets were $20 and the rubber nic nacs/hardware was $5...so for $140 I got a rubber mounted, air cooled, silent ballast, that is actually equivalent to two ballasts that would normally cost $300-$500...not a bad deal IMO.

What I started with...

rubber mounting stuff...

rubber feet installed...

Ballast with wires trimmed up and Ignitor/Cap snugged (I know cap's don't like heat and shouldn't be next to the ballast, but with the air cooling I didn't think it would matter..havn't heard of any problems with it and its been awhile...)

The cooling fan and Mcgyver power adapter (While Mcgyvered, it is still sound, and safe)

Ballast and friends tucked in...

Cooling stuff installed...

The Big Ass Relay being wired...(note: the coil only uses 2w, so you can use any cheap time you want with it)

Wiring the trigger wire to the Relay Coil...

All installed into the Box...

Female Sockets in...

Labeled for IEUP ( Idiot End User Protection)...

Power and Trigger cords in...

Again labeled for IEUP...

Ready to go...

Hey hydrolized, is that just a box made to house ballast parts? Where'd you get it?

Radiate, yes it is specifically for ballasts. It's called a Transformer Can and I found it on Ebay.

Thanks Them. Just wished I didn't use a cell phone camera

Great post, thanks!

Got a source for the relay? I can match the price for just about everything else, but for some reason it's $100 for a DPDT relay that'll take 1000 watts.
