And welcome to the garden!

Id go for 600 if possible.

Although Im not sure if they sell 4/600 watt ballasts at home depot.

Is ordering on phone or online an option? Money order?

I'd recommend a 400
lighting or hydro store
not Home Depot

I will be running a 1000wHPS in a slightly larger space. I haven't fired her up yet, still doing last minute construction stuff. I'll let you know how it goes.

i should have been a little more descriptive on my real grow area.400wtts,just sounds pretty exterme for such a small grow area, but i will admit i dont know nothing about growing indoors, but am pretty good outdoors but am forced inside due to nieghbors.want to only try one or two plants.you know the size of a shower in a small camptrailer?i will only have room for one or two at most.i use a friend of mines shower so the one in my camptrailer is the only spot i have to try.its only for personal use and medicine for my arthritis so one or two would be enough if i constantly keep some growing since some of my efforts will produce males, but hopfully i will get lucky first time around

400w is perfect for a 3x3 area, but if you want to do it small you might want to start with T5 fluorescents. They are a little more expensive per lumen to buy, but you can upgrade in much smaller increments than HID lights.
A 48 inch T5 bulb will put out between 4k and 5k lumens each. So you need 6-8 bulbs to match the lumen output of a 400w MH(30-40k lumens on average) or 10-12 bulbs to match the lumens of a 400w HPS(45-55k lumens on average)

The best suggestion I can give is do as much reading on the subject as possible.

Damn I'm slow, I just realised you said 3x3 and I'm talking about 4ft fluorescents The same thing should apply except for what I said about the lumens, 3ft T5s are about 3500 lumens each so about 10 to match a 400w mh and closer to 15 to match a 400w hps.
Depending on the spectrum of the bulbs it might not take so many to match the speed of growth.

Lumens dont really tell you the whole story.

I have a 4by4 foot room with a 600. I wish somebody would have told me to get a 1000 instead.

If I were you Id put a 600 in there.

Get a stanley blower for 40 bucks and it will vent your room fine.
