![]() | I've got a quick question for everyone. I picked up some bulbs today... they were cheap, like $2.50 for a box of two bulbs. Anyways, they are the "Sylvania" Double Life - Soft White Light Bulbs... below is a picture of the box. Okay, to me, that seems like quite a lot of Lumens (1580) in such a small bulb... what are the disadvantages to these bulbs. It feels like it might emit more heat then one of the tube flos, is this observation correct? Now, obviously it isn't a HID bulb, so those "disadvantages" don't need to be listed - but as far as closet growing, putting a couple of these in their own adjustable desk lamp could be beneficial for space constraints, wouldn't you say? doob

![]() | just for your info, you may want to look up the lumen per watt ratio of the compact flourescents and reg flouros .. think you may get tha same .. about for around 30W with flouros.. not to mention that 4 x 100W incandescents = 6320 lumens ... whereas a 430W SON AGRO HPS is around 53,000 lumens .. which is a beter deal? errr... thats about 8.4x the efficiency ... sooo..... ![]() | As mentioned in my first post, one obvious disadvantage is that it isn't a HID lighting system, understood. However, many people on this board do not have the funds for a 430W Son Agro nor the space to put it in. It is very obvious, at least to me, that the HPS is definitely more efficient, however in very small spaces, these might at least sustain the life of a cannabis plant - maybe not produce the same results as a 430W Son Agro, but still produce. doob [This message has been edited by Doobious (edited October 21, 2000).]

![]() | just a reminder here ... total cost of the system is what really counts .. check it out: adjust your cost per kWh for your area .. some are more some are less ... [[400W x 1344h] x .10cents/kWh = [veg cost] = $53.76 + [400W x 672h] x .10cents/kWh = [flwr cost] = $26.88] = $80.64 is what it costs to do a standard 16 week grow .. useing 400 watts ... so if you spend about $200 at ebay .. you will have paid for it in about 4-5 grows [this assumes you get something smokeable out of a grow with incandescents .. better odds of some smoke .. and a bit longer payback .. with flouros =)] short run .. do what you gotta .. long run? its not worth it Not to get something descent .. so actually, you really Do save mony by not takin shortcuts .. imho of course =)

![]() | Thats an incandescent bulb. It is using 100 REAL watts. A compact fluoro @ 22 watts will put out nearly the same amount of light and a hell of a lot less heat, at 1/5 of the power consumption. Those, or regular fluoro tubes would be a far better choice IMHO. Also remember growing with small lights like these, you need several even to cover a small area. 5 of those fluoros will use 108 watts. 5 of your bulbs consumes 500! And gives out heat and a poor light spectrum too. Cheers PL [This message has been edited by Papa Lazarou (edited October 22, 2000).]
