HPS vs comp floros for veg

I was wondering what the advantages of using a hps system as opposed to compact floros for veging are? is it worth my time to order and hps or should I stick with the compact floros I can get at walmart?

Fluoros can grow great plants until theyre a certain size, then its no contest, the HID is far superior

would I be better off to use compact floros for veg and get a 400wMH for flowering? I can't afford an HPS for veg and a MH for flower.

just get the HPS, you can use it for the whole grow because it's a better all round light.

if you already have compact floros then they'll be fine for vegging and use the HPS for flower

You've got things a little confused. If you want to go with two lighting systems, it's MH for veg and HPS for flower. I would suggest buying the HPS and using it for the entire process, though. It will run those flouros into the ground, no contest.

Thank you, I had that a bit mixed up. I was under the impression that the MH had the correct spectrum for flowering but I'm not sure where I got that idea. maybe I've been smoking too much and reading to little lately.

You want to have both lights, just get a CONVERSION
bulb for what you have.....if you get the 400 HPS, than if
you have some extra money, get yourself a MH CONVERSION
bulb, your lil plants can do well under the HPS, but the MH is
what the *babies* want....flowering, is when you would have
your HPS goin!

Good Luck with that!

Here is the deal...........u can use a flourescent tube to start clones and then once they root in 7 to 14 days give or take then move them into the veg room with the metal halide,The hps is really only for the red orange light that induces flowering better. You may also use the MH all the way but you will notice way better yield and nicer harvest if you use a HPS.

It all depends on so many things....... how bug the room how many plants and on and on.But You must never use the HPS to veg alone or clone. The hps is for FLOWERING>

It seems action is also a little confused.

Many people (myself included) use HPS lights for the entire grow. Overall, they are more efficent, and if you want to get just one light, get the HPS. What you sacrifice in slightly greater internodal distance while vegging with HPS, you make up in tight, fat buds that you couldn't get with MH.

I'm still gonna vote for the 400W HPS.

The spectrum and comparative lumen output( brightness ) per watt is the difference between Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium. If you had to choose one or the other, the MH provides better all-purpose spectrum for plant growth. It is strong in blue and indigo which promotes compact stem and leaf production. It is a better light for the early stages of growth ,when leaf and stem production are most important. In the flowering stage, there is just enough red and yellow to produce flowering.
The HPS comes into its own as a flowering light. It is strong in the red /yellow part of the spectrum which promotes larger and more abundant blossams with longer stems. It is more efficient and brighter( lumens per watt ), than the MH,which will increase yield.
