Question HELP!!! Lighting Help Needed Pic
permalink

This is my first grow and I need help with newly germinated seedlings. The question is Can I place the 3-4 day old seedlings under a 400w MH and 430w HPS approx. 3ft from bulb to seedling or should I keep them under (6) 32w floros approx 6" away? I need HID to heat up room, it runs 65-70 degrees without. I'm setup for co2 but temps aren't high enough and I've read that co2 enrichment should start after germination. Could someone please advise

hrrrm .. well i can help you with the lighting but im not much for co2, never grown that much to need it.

U can start your sprouts fine with a MH/HPS 400w, i have done it many times (untill i wasnt allowed to gro anymore )

Many people use fluros to start their plants, but i never did this and every plant i grew was a THC Monster!!

Not to mention i always had extremely thick stems and not the slightest amount of stretching .. there were new nodes every
2-3cm creating a tight little bush with no topping or training

So yeh, placing the seedlings about 3feet from the light will be fine (only use one light for now while there small then chuck the other in there)

PEACE

Could you tell me what method do you use to detemind how far away to have your HID lamps from your seedlings and what age is the plants when you adjust light height i.e. seedlings o.k. under 400w MH @ 3ft. When can you move lights closer and when should I turn on the MH ? Had to added floresents at the last minute because I hadn't thought about them in the design. I didn't really want to use floresents but i read the intense light would kill seedlings so I threw together (6) 32 w floresents but temp isn't high enough to use co2. Anybodys input would help...

Room Setup:
5' x 5' room inside 8' x 9' room
400w MH and 430w HPS (veg.)
430w HPS and 1000w Hortilux HPS (flowering)
Sun System Hoods w/Glass covers
Venting hoods with inline 250cfm and (3) 4" square fan
Exhausting with 10" Circle 560 CFM fan all venting thru chimney
Compugas co2 Controller
Heat and Humidity Controller
20lbs. co2 tank
Mylar
12" and 6" osc. fans

Those are even my hoods too! Good for you and you went with the best quality and not these crap ballasts I see on internet.

I have 2 400 HPS and I run the reflectors less than a foot from tops. No problems with getting to hot for me, my house stays at 61 with the weather outside.

I also use fans to blow across top of plant to wick away the heat.

But unfortunately, I still have clones that won't be ready for 2 months. And summer is coming! Doh! Next year I will start in January so that I can get the free heat from lamps in winter. And not heat my house uneccesarily in July! Yikes

damn ! nice setup you got there

you must be planning on growing alot of plants, 15 or more atleast.

Also i noticed you said the light housing had glass covers?
Take them off as they trap in heat and also effect light direction.

Just keep the lights 3feet from seedlings to about 5" then bring them to 2feet

I've been collecting the bits and pieces of equipment over the last 3 months. This will be my 1st grow, 1st growroom design, Hell 1st everything.
Planning on growing 7-8 plants using FIM technic. All will be planted in organic soil in 5 gal. buckets. inside of milk creates. Just had 28 Narvana seedling out of 50 pop-up that were germinated on 4/29/02.
I designed the growroom WITHOUT intake air. I'm using co2, so I thought that the hoods should be vented to control heat levels(1430w) which would activate Exhaust system, thus shutting down and restarting co2 system everytime the exhaust fan ran. The room is setup up to maintain 1600 ppm of co2. In order to maintain 1600 ppm the co2 system is set to release @ 30cfm for 38 secs. every 19 mins during "lights on " cycle. My thoughts are if I removed glass lense, I would have to make air intake defeating co2 system.
The only knowledge I have is what I'm reading in the threads, books i'm reading and questions i'm asking. So please anyone i'm open for suggestions & crtiticium. I will be counting on the Overgrow Family to help make this 1st grow go smoothly and sucessfully. Thanks To All...

only 7-8 plants?

Imho you dont even need co2 for that many. maybe 10 or more

ive seen setups with 14,17 and 22 plants, with no co2 and they went very nice

You really think 10 or more 5 gal buckets in 25 sq. ft.
I've been look for Journals with simular dimensions and setup to get ideas of how I can grow effiecient for my given space 25 sq ft using 1430w HPS.
