Help me with my very first indoor lighting setup (links inside)
permalink

I think I've finally found a pretty good budget light setup.

from indoorgardensupplies.com

Here are the 2 lights I think I will be buying.....

- Fluorescent -
Model #PL24WS-C:
Has 4 chains for hanging. Can be adjusted in 1/2" increments
4-20 Watt Lamps
Deluxe Ballast
24" L x 19" W x 2" H
5-1/2" Lamp Spacing

Price $94

indoorgardensupplies.com
[Mod note: No direct links to commercial sites.]

- High Pressure Sodium -
Model #HFS400:
400 Watt High Pressure Sodium Fixture

Price $307

indoorgardensupplies.com
[Mod note: See above.]

So, for $400 I could have myself a complete lighting setup. Now - since I assume your all 'professional growers' - How would you rate this potential system of mine?

Could the single Fluro fixture be used all through the life cycle, even flowering? that would save me a big chunk-o-change.

Im open for any discussion, tips, or quite franky anything you guys could throw at me. Besides it will be a good while before I could purchase either of these anyway, because my check comes in the 29th of october (about 1 week)

whatayya say? (and please visit the sites to view the actual lights themselves)

Well you had it right above..I dont think they like the links to commercial sites.. maybe you can edit them out... so they dont kill your thread.

any ways not bad.. but I think the HPS could be gotten cheaper.. I would also go for a HPS and A MH.. probably get an unwired kit and wire my own for expence. ALSO IMO less wattage more lights is better than more wattage one light.. IE 2 200watt lights better than 1 400.. ofcourse this all depends on growroom restraints.

1. Im not trying to advertise that site or anything, just thought it would serve the thread better for viewers to see what lights Im talking about, and pics. If a mod deems it against the rules, so be it, I dont see the big deal though...

2. The fluorescent fixture is NOT 1 400 watt, its four 20-watt lamps inside the fixture. 4 seperate bulbs. The website says that it will put out like 100,000 lumens.

I also would like to ask again, Can a decent fluro system be used throughout a plants life? germination to cultivation? ot is an HID light absolutely positivley needed?

thanks for any help......

Cool No, Hid not absolutely needed.

Back in my day Sonny...

Back in the 60's and 70's Fluoro's was what you grew with. It's just the difference in bud is night and day with a 400watt Hid or a really good growbox with lower wattages compared to fluoro's.

you have 3280 lumens in fluoro's according to the chart on page 3 of the lamp lumen data link. 50,000 for the hps equals 53,280 total lumens which for optimum lumens (7,000 per sq. ft.) would give you a 7 1/2 sq. ft. grow space. Median range (5,000) would be 10 sq. ft.

Now figure out how many fluoro's you would need to buy to do the job of the hps. Plus you need the right spectrum bulbs for the fluoro's. You replace fluoro's faster too.

Look around for the 400 hps, sometimes they are cheaper than that.

Oh, and the no direct links? Just forget the www and you will be fine.

Peace,
Plains

I completely understand your budget thought process: I thought I got a great deal at a local Hydro store in MN But I was wrong, dead wrong. For not researching enough or reading more forums than I did, I got taken for like $85 in my three purchases, Ballast, Light, Reflector. Why I didn't look at EBAY earlier; is my fault. The overall best in my opinion was KG Hydro out of NY. 1 877 KG HYDRO they also have a EBAY Store to check out! For the second phase of my box thats where I am going to shop. As I see it its City and State TAX VS. Shipping & Handling... Best of Luck to you 8: 45 EST

people put direct links on here all the time and i've never heard of an admin taking it out, i've done it dozens of times, anyway, you could do alot better for 400 bucks, there is absoulutly no way that 4 20 watt flourecent bulbs will put out 100,000 lumens, or 10,000 lumens for that matter, i've done extensive research into flouros and that light your mentioned is a rip off IMO, check this light out, its the same price, its high output, it's 10,000 lumens and you get 2 sets of bulbs (one of each spectrum) High Tech Garden Supply if you only get the veg bulbs then its like 13 bucks cheaper. I've done entire grows using these. As far as the hps goes, HTGSupply also has a nice selection of those, i think they have a pretty good one for 165 bucks that comes with an hps and a mh conversion bulb. HTG probably has some of the best prices for lighting on the net.

HTG Supply. Go with the 1000W HPS for the money you're looking to spend. Good light, good nutes (Advanced Nutrients), and proper airflow(temps); everything else is genetics and patience.
