I got a 400w HPS from a worker changing a street light. I asked him is i could buy a new bulb off of him and he gave me one for free.... ![]() Are they the same as buying one from a hydro grow store. It is a Phillips Ceramalux 400w HPS with Alto lamp Technology. the guy told me thy r the latest bulbs that they use for street lights and they have a very long life span not like the older 400wHPS that they used to use. Thay look the same as my other 400w HPS but at the top od bulb, there is a sunk in hole and it is green, but it is not an open hole. Just sunk in not flat like my old one. He told me that this is the new Alto technology that makes them last longer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ![]()

![]() | The 70w bulbs that came with my new fixtures also have that indentation. a standard security light hps like the ones in streetlights differ from certain grow bulbs in that the grow bulbs have a coating or an added chemical to alter the spectrum a little in hps, it's usually to add more blue to the spectrum what I don't know is if hps lights are the same as floros in that they all start with the same basic spectrum, and a coated bulb only absorbs some of the light that a plant would screen out anyway, makeing the more expensive bulb not as bright as the cheap ones.

![]() ![]() ![]() | they arent the same, but yes, they are similar and could be used. Grow light production is specifically focused on the best light for plants, street lighting is specifically focused on effieciency and brightness.

hey man this is a good topic i use to do powerline work for about 8 years and in this years iv aqumulated lots of bulbes and lights, but to make it short the street lights are what i use for my grow. to me they get the job done nicely, but compared to a real grow bulb i dont know but i can tell u this if it grows any faster than they do now, it would amize me. im very sadesfided with what i have i dont have alot of mony tied up in it, i think i would like to buy a 400wt-hps grow system and give them a test side by side and see what the difference is. if all the grow bulbes do is add alittle bule sp to the grow then i think by adding a floresent or a florex would do about the same right. i would love to see a side by side chart or a run down on the spectroms of both bulbs to compare ![]()

![]() | Well i plugged her in a i can see a difference. The street light is more bluish and white than the grow light that is more yellowish orange. It has been in for 3 days now and i see a great differnce in growth. As if it is getting more spectrum of light. I noticed that the bulb is also cooler and doesnt give aff as much heat. So in my opinion, peeps may just be wasting there time buying thoses so called grow lights that give off to much heat and the light is controlled with coating to lower the range of spectrum. I think it is just a money thing for nurseries and i see more results in 3 days of rapid growth so, maybee street lights r better. Also I can't find anywere of tests that have been done to determine if grow lights r better than street lights. I know my street light is much brighter and gives off less heat than my grow light. And my grow light is only 3 months old. Hmmmmmm maybee some of us r on to something!!!! As all of us know that light is energy for our MJ and maybee the new HPS street lights r better than some think!!!!!

i here u dizzy im sure that something will come up about it it but untill thenhere is a pic i took today off a project of mine, as u can see it works good for me. i started with 400wt/mh ,and when i trans planted them they were light starved . they have been in this light setup for 20 days, 6 days ago i changed light to 400wt/hps looks good to me just not enough space for what i want to do, iv got enough lights to light up a wallmart parking lot, so as sone as i get moved to new location the super growroom will be under constuction. but anyway iv been at this inside grow for 2-3 years and i tell u there is alot off smart people on here, so man just keep a open mind about just about everything and keep exsperimenting, and u will find the grow that fits u . i do alot of crazy stuff some bad some good but iv enjoyed every minute of it.
