Question Where do you find high wattage lights?
permalink

I made a trip to Home Depot today, but I couldn't seem to locate any of the high wattage bulbs, the highest I could find was 80 watts. Was I looking in the wrong place, I was under the assumption they only had ONE lighting department. I picked up a 40w Aquarium and Plant Flo light, will that work for now? Any input from EXPERIENCED growers would be appreciated! (Not to offend any junior growers, but I don't usually like taking advice from someone who is just as un-educated on this subject as me)

Okay there is a section where they sell flood lights at home depot or lowes. I think it is next to ceiling fan lights. The highest I have seen there is 150 watts. Also if you get the flood light you have to groud it yourself. YOu can find great deals on lights online. That's probably the best. ohiosmoker found 400 watt HID's with ballast and reflector for 65 dollars plus shipping online. I do not know about the fish tank lights. I used flours and that may be a good thing to start with, or a flourex. Also how many plants are growing under the light. If you could read the lumens off the box and tell us what both say, and then your size space that would eb great. good luck

Sorry if I was unclear...

But I only bought one light. It was a GE (general electric, the brand, if it matters) Flourescent fixture with a wide spectrum bulb, it said that the bulb emits more blue and deep red, which I'm pretty sure I read somewhere is good for the plants right? I couldn't any lumen data, the only thing I found on the box said that there was a 3050 color temperature, which was followed by 90 CRI <(I have no idea what that means). The area I'm growing in is about 4 sq. ft. and there are currently 5 plants, 4 are about a week old, the other is 2 1/2-3 wks. old, but all are relatively small. (the largest plant is about 4 inches tall) Also, one other question, though it doesn't have much to do with lights. Since this is my first attempt at growing, I don't know, but will my plant start to emit smells BEFORE the drying/curing stage? Thanks again for any info.

If I had seen this post earlier, I woulda' said, splash out for an HID, 'cause in the long run it pays dividends.

What's the wattage on your light? Or was there no info?

CRI = Color Rendering Index. (CRI 90 is very good. Nice and bright!)
CRI is an index of how the light reflects colours, and it's relative lumnosity.
If I were you, I'd go get myself at least another 150W HPS (or even a 70 watter). That'd do nicely along with the fluoro for five plants.

Good luck. Hope it goes well...

The flour. bulb I bought was 40w. So the combination of the two together, (a 150w HPS and the 40w flo. light) would be sufficient throughout the whole growing process?

for 4 sq. ft., I would say, yes, 150W HPS and that fluoro would be enough.

Good luck...

You will need at least that 150 watter if you want to grow 5 plants. 40 watts won't do it for sure. The 150 might if you keep them small. Anything less and you won't get much bud. You want at least 50 watts per square foot. Remember that hid's put out more lumens per watt as the flos.
