HPS Lumen Maintenance

Over time, the gradual reduction in the quality of light emitted from any High Intensity Discharge lighting system occurs for a number of reasons. Called Light Loss Factors (or LLF), these include lamp lumen depreciation, luminaire dirt depreciation, deterioration of luminaire surfaces, dirt on room surfaces, performance of auxiliary equipment and supply voltage. Ambient temperature generally has no effect on the light output of HPS lamps.

Lumen maintenance curves reflect the average lumen maintenance for all lamp types in a given category when operated at rated wattage. Mean lumens for HID lamps are the average light output throughout the rated life of a lamp.

For High Pressure Sodium Lamps, mean light output occurs at 50% of rated average life.

As a group, both clear and diffuse coated High Pressure Sodium Lamps have excellent lumen maintenance as seen in this diagram. Additional information on specific lamp types can be obtained from manufacturers' lamp catalogs.

Lighting Efficiency
permalink

The most common and logical measure of lighting efficiency is calculated by dividing light output (measured in lumens) by the electric input (in watts). The resulting value is lumens per watt, sometimes referred to as LPW. Since the value for lumens per watt is always greater than one, the lighting industry correctly refers to the "efficiency" of a lamp as the lamp's "efficacy."

Be careful about your assumptions of LPW since some light sources require the use of electric ballasts to provide required circuit conditions. Input wattage values from most manufacturers' catalogs and tables refer only to the wattage of the lamp alone.

The figure shown here illustrates the efficacy of various light sources (including ballast load) as well as the average rated life of different lamp types.

Hey Stoney!
Looks like you've got the lighting bug now!

A couple of additional notes:

Mean (or average) lumens are measured at %50 of life for lamps rated at 24,000+ hours, This applies mostly to HPS lamps rated 50W and above, Metal halides and flourescent's have their average output measured at %40 of rated life.

Also the efficacy for the newest flourescents now aproaches 92 Lumens/watt (the chart showed 80 L/PW)

Other than that your doing a great job! A+ overall!

As a matter of fact I just bought one of these lights yesterday. The Fluorex 65watt floro ($29 @ home depot) claims to have a greater efficiency then even the HPS! Here is what the side of the box says:

Compare the costs & you be the judge

Bulb type..........Lumens..........Energy Consumed..........Annual costs
65w Fluorex............6825............65watts...........................$28.47
70w HPS.................6300............70watts...........................$30.66
100w MV.................4500............100watts.........................$43.80
