Switched to 240 Volt what should I expect.

I Purchased a Sun grow 1 600 Watt HPS light. It has a switch from 120 to 240, on the front. I went to Wally world and picked up a dryer extension cord and a regular heavy duty appliance cord with three wires. I spliced them together and walla. My light now can fit into a 240 electric dryer spot. Now my question is. Do they make 240 capable timers And should I worry using my 15 amp 130 v Timer ? Also what type of extra watts should I get from a 600? Also what are the other benefits? I've read that it lowers your electric bill and it runs cooler. What runs cooler the lamp or the ballast? Also Would the Electric bill reduced at a noticeable rate? Does anyone have a equation? Thanks Lots of questions So I'll just keep searching. it. I was just wondering if it was worth it.

Timers- Water heater timers are 240V

Amperage is lowered through ballast. Runs cooler.

Electric savings are negligible.

Don't run it through your 15A/130V timer.

It means that a 600 watt lamp needs 600 watts, regardless of the voltage.

So, it's just the ballast that runs cooler?

Lastly, do I need to do some modification of my electrical system to run 347 volts? Which my light was originally wired for.

Kronic is right. 600w=600W. The amperage is reduced when voltage is increased. Reducing amps reduces the "force" at which electrons are flowing through the conductor. Less heat produced by ballast. Simplistic explanation.

Do you have 347V available to you?

I...don't know...

My electrical expertice stops at "Hmmm, this wire's close to the same colour as this wire, guess I can splice it"

Can I make it available to me?

Not if you are living in a regular house in the USA. It will either be 120V or 240V.

P.S. Keep your fingers out of the sockets.

If my finger could fit in a light socket, I probably would've learned the hard way already. ~Toke a bowl~ "Damn, got that bit of fuzz stuck in the socket.. see if I can grab it ou... ZAP!

I live in Canada, and I don't have 347 in my house. I guess it was kinda pointless asking, since my ballast isn't even in my grow box...

Cool well it only cost me 15 bucks to convert over to 240 a couple of appliance extension cords and a little electric tape and walla. But I also bought a very expensive light that comes pre wired for 240. All I have to do is switch a switch and plug her in a 240 line. And she works. I have her plugged in and am looking for a 240 v Timer. For right now I do it manually. Pain in the ass Thank you buzzmobile for the response. I guess its really only worth saving your ballist. Go figure
