que pasa mufasas,

i have what may sound like a stupid question, i want to buy a ballast kit for an hps, however found two types of hps lights, one is a bulb, much like that of the shape of any other regular bulb found in a bathroom or in a hallway, and one is called a lamp, this "lamp" is much skinny-er and longer, both say hps, but is there a differance, and if so , then what? cause i dunno...

and what the hell is a mogul base? i just don't want to fork over mucho dinero and find that the lights wont fit in to the ballast...

thanks for your help-
fantasmo

sorry if i sound...................

You want the "lamp". To my knowledge all HPS are long and skinny although size varies depending on bulb wattage. Never seen one shaped like a normal incandescent light bulb.

The "mogul" is a ceramic base or fixture that you screw the bulb into. Designed to handle the higher power draw of the HPS bulb.

Normally if you are a buying a "kit" it will include the hardware needed to run the light in a little vented metal box then some heavy duty cable to a mogul base plus another cable to plug into the electric socket. Also most kits include a lamp or you can order your choice separately.

Note the hardware in the ballast box must match your light i.e. 400W kit needs a 400W bulb.

Good Luck

A mogul base is just the size of the socket. For example, a regular incandescent light bulb uses a medium base. While a HPS or MH bulb uses a larger mogul base.

I would suggest that you forget the kit. It sounds like you are just starting out, so I would recommend just getting a complete HPS system. You could get a 400W HPS for less than $150 shipped from insidesun.com or altgarden.com.

A HPS lamp and a HPS bulb are the same thing. Smaller wattage HPS bulbs (e.g. 50W, 70W..ect) do resemble regular incandescent bulbs. The size and shape of a HPS bulb varies widely. A 400W HPS, for example, is generally a long skinny tube about 8 or 9 inches in length and about 2 inches in diameter.
