ok....i've found hps and mh's but what kind of lamp do i put them in.... clearly says doin't use them in lamps you'd normally use an incandescent light bulb

If I follow right..

You have found an HPS or MH light bulb, the bulb itself is the lamp . Your right, it wont work in your common everyday light socket.

Basicaly. you need a mogul socket, and ballast kit. HPS ballasts tend to be more expensive then MH ballasts, they have an extra part in them, called an ignitor.

You can find them at hydro stores and online. Or try asking freinds who have grown and you trust. They come as low as 50 and as high as 1500 watts, though 250, 400, 600, and 1000 are the most common . The more watts the higher the cost of ballasts/bulbs and repairs .. but larger lamps put out the lumens and are worth the investment and repairs by far, but having all the different sizes is great for the gardener to decide which lamp they want, because we all deal with different spacing and area, venting etc...

Use the search in the lighting, construction and indoor gardening forusm to find further threads on Ballast, Lamp, and lamp reflector hood etc. costs.

I am a "new jack" myself as far as growing game... I am on my second grow ever, but the little that I've learn is this, MH mostly used for veging cycle after you move your plants from a nurcery. My first grow I've used HPS on both cycles, veg. and flowering, and end up with realy tall plants. I'm on day48 now ( gave them a little extra time in veg. to get strong), under MH for past 21 days. I see a big diffrence from the grow I had before. I am planning to switch to 12-12 under the HPS in a week or so.

I bought a 400w HPS sistem,(balast, light socket , reflector and a light bulb ) Then I bought a 400w conversion from HPS to MH bulb. This way I can use the same balast for both MH conversion bulb, and HPS bulb that comes together with a set. I ordered everything from Inside Sun.com. They are reliable company.
It cost me $200, shiping and handling included (conversion bulb $40 and the sistem $135. Shiping and handeling was $25 )

You can probably get it for much cheaper if you invest a little time into finding what you want. I needed it right away.
