Question Wrong timer...
permalink

Here's the promblem...I bought a "Intermatic- lamp and appliance timer; 2 prong connection(TN111C)",and my 400 watt hps light has a three prong connection,so it wont plug into the timer because its not an heavy duty timer which has a 3 prong timer. Can i buy a 3 prong adapter to connect to the timer or should i buy a heavy duty timer?By the way my timer is pluged into a grounded surge protecter.THANKS ALOT!!!

Yes, but no...

Sure, you could buy an adapter and run the lights from that timer, but it's highly discouraged. The purpose of the third plug (the "ground") is entirely for safety. If you don't have perfect power coming into your outlet (and, unless you have multi-thousand dollar power conditioners somewhere between the outlet and the power from the street, you don't) the chance that your ballast could rupture your bulb increases dramatically.

Do not use those adapters, they are not safe. Just spring for a 3 prong timer, like $10 at home depot. Cheaper than springing for a new house.
