I have a hard time finding this data on the net. The EYE online product guide doesn't even include the Hortilux line.

that Hortilux Blue sure looks great. Expensive no doubt If you supplimented that with a nice HPS you'd upstage Mr.Sun. Welllll, maybe not, but the results would be spectacular Thanks penguin. Have you seen this one? Cool reference sientbob showed me this link and now I understand.

Yeah, look at the colour temp of those fluorescents. Both 5500K but the spectrum sure is different. #'s are deceptive

Who makes that "standard" MH? and what exactly is standard? what use is it to have the graph if it doesn't represent the bulb I am about to buy?

I like the idea of compiling them here. But they should all be specific, if they are gonna be useful. On that note, Here are a bunch of generic ones. muwhaahahahahaha and a little twist to it, enough to make your eyes bug out if you ask me.

The unspecified MH was given as a "standard" in the Hortilux Blue ad copy. Obviously the EYE marketing folks had a reason for choosing it. Looks like the SunMaster Warm to me. Removed.

Aquabiotic has the kind of info I have been trying to find, presented well.

The peak output of a HPS grow bulb should be at exactly 662nm anything else is a loss of efficiency. 662nm will produce the highest efficiency photosynthesis. Your MH should peak at 453nm. some small quantity of light is needed at other frequencies for phytochromes, etc, but generally very little is needed and is mroe than amply supplied by the bulbs. Plants will use other frequencies in photosynthesis but less efficiently than those two.

Those are the peaks of the Chlorophyll A & B absorption curves, so it stands to reason that horticultural bulbs should produce most of their output in those wavelengths. It seems that cool white fluorescent is very efficient (thanks again, sientbob ) in this regard. Can you recommend any HID bulbs that come close to the ideal?

Would a combination of two sources, each monochromatic at the given wavelengths, produce the best plant growth?

Almost all of the output of the Hortilux Super HPS is in the phycoerythrin and phycocyanin ranges, with just a little in the blue range of chlorophyll b. Despite this, it is an extremely popular horticultural bulb, and some very experienced growers have claimed that it is the most efficient bulb currently available, and that it is well-suited for all phases of plant growth.

I am also interested in how artificial light spectra can be used to manipulate aspects of plant growth. For example, it has been demonstrated that phytochrome response to red:far red ratio plays an important role in the initiation of flowering, internode length, and florabundance in some herbacious short day plants.

I'll bet that a scanning spectroradiometer would be a lot more fun to play with than a quantum meter.
