Hey sleepy - that bulb is actually a Phillips Mastercolor Retro-White. It converts HPS to MH.

What I'm wondering is what is Relative Intensity? Is that relative to itself, or relative to other lights?

The way I'm reading it is that a bulb with really intense-appearing relative intensity all around, yet is low lumen - is just producing a lot of visible light, not PAR. and they're using the chart to sell the bulb.

*edit*
That was what I thought - when bulb manufacturers overlay the SPD of their bulb on top of the photosynthesis action chart, it makes it look like they provide more saturation of the chlorophyll or something, when actually, they are just playing with the chart.

soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

is that bulb better than a standard hps? it looks really good from the graph

says it produces more red and a good amount of blue too

any of you light gurus have knowledge to throw down on this one?

An explanation of results:

-Low capacity of induce photosynthesis: just 0,76pur/w, 30% less than a typical 400w HPS bulb (Phillips SONT plus).

-Spectrum itself very blue, thus the low relation PPF/PUR:65%, while HPS are between 69 and 75%. This parameter shows how is the spectrum for using the photons emited into photosynthesis. R/B ratio is 4, very adecuate for vegging.

-But the difference in spectrum against HPS is little (10%), while the main difference is in the bulb efficiency: just 26%, while the SONT have 33,6%, wich is near 30% more light emited per watt consumed.

So potential yield using this bulb is about 30% less than flowering with a HPS. Of course, there is qualitative advantages not shown, wich can compensate partially: more compact plants (better light usage, less light losses), healthier grow, better CO2 absortion. But its very difficult this compensate for 30% less photons avalaible, wich is very much.

When first CDM reached the market, i though they were going to be the next growing light, due to its better spectrum (compared with HPSs) and excelent efficiency. But when i studied their specs, i noticed their quick lm depreciation, so the average perfomance along it short life (2-3000h, 2-3 grows) isnt so great as it seems just looking at initial specs.

CMH are the discharge lamps wich loses emission faster, reaching 70% of initial output in 5000h in best cases and running with electronic ballast. Most times, they are below 80% of initial emission at just 3K h. Together with high price, CDM are a pricey alternative.

Aditionally, although they run with HPS's ballast, CDM need a narrower range of voltage compared with HPS, so running a CDM with a generic magnetic HPS ballast probably result in damaging the bulb faster yet.

Ouch!

Sorry, CDM is the Phillips nomenclature for CMH. I was checking again in Phillips website lm degradation of CMH, so i typed it wrong.

Three bulbs I am interested in seeing on the chart are three 1kw bulbs from SolarMax. (SolarMax One, SolarMax Veg, & Solarmax Gold)

I posted their charts on the SPD chart thread -
http://www.gardenscure.com/420/light...-bulbs-10.html
still figuring out how to enter data into the spreadsheet ...But I am reading up on the previous posts. I don't think I stretch/skewed correctly, so I won't publish what I came up with.

So just to clarify some things: Everyone has been testing bulbs, which one has been the more efficient, photosynthetically and electric wise?

So Far, it's the Hortilux EYE AC - 1kw HPS as the most efficient and effective - but only a handful of bulbs have been added so far.
